We stayed two night in Rambuttri Village Inn, having a great first day/night, but coming into some problems the next.
First of all, the hotel is located perfectly in the madness of Bangkok. The street/area is made for backpackers, tons of cheap/tasty food, endless shopping, and funky bars. it's about one block from Koh San road, which we found nice- not wanting to be in the complete middle of it all.
The rooms are fine, nothing special, but nothing to complain about either. We got the triple person room for the first night, but needed to change to the two person room the following, as one person was flying home.
We booked a tour to do the floating market and Tiger Temple (highly recommend, but try to get to the tigers earlier than 3 pm to have a chance in feeding cubs) the second day, leaving around 7am. We knew we needed to change rooms, so we went downstairs at 6:30am to ask the receptionist what we should do with our bags since we would be gone all day. They have an area that holds your bags for 20 baht/day, so we were prepared to pay to have them held, and change to the smaller room once we returned in the evening.
Instead, the woman at the front told us it was fine, we could stay in the triple room (without having to pay the difference since we'd already pre-paid online). We thought that was great, very nice of her to do.
However, when we returned that night (after a very long day, mind you), we get a call as we're about to head out for dinner, asking us why we're in the room, why we didn't change, blahblahblah. We explained what happened in the morning, and even offered to change then. The lady is yelling at us over the phone, saying there aren't other rooms left now, and we have to pay 500 baht to stay there.
None of it made any sense- there wasn't anyone who had arrived and needed the room we were in, they didn't even CLEAN it while we were gone, for God's sake. And they'd given away the two person room we'd booked anyways.
The woman told us to come down at 9am the next morning to talk to the manager about it, and (surprise surprise) when we did, she was "on holiday." it was pretty frustrating. especialy considering they had a 1000 baht key deposit, so we were worried they might keep it.
check out was a hassle, they took forever, nearly making us miss our flight, then having the nerve to tell us, "if you have a flight, then you should come down even earlier to check out so it's not rushed." when the only reason it was "rushed" was because we were arguing between ten million different people for an hour.
all in all, it's a good place, cheap, and great location. and perhaps there was just added stress because of the holiday season/high time to travel. nevertheless, i thought i'd share the experience so others can look out for the same kind of shadiness.
and note- they always require 1,000 baht key deposit** (we got all of ours back after the morning of fighting)
make sure you put the card on the door to get your room cleaned, otherwise you have to go downstairs...
