Shanti Lodge is a low priced guest house located quite unpractically in the western outskirts of Bangkok close to the river, in a rather poor and dirty neighbourhood without much to see or to do, on a busy and noisy street. Also, the walls within the building are paperthin, so be prepared for bad nights.
Our "double ensuite" room was cheap but tiny: maybe 2.5m x 2.5m with a double bed and a single bed squished into it, without any closet space and including the tiny bathroom, leaving hardly any space in the room itself to move or to put your luggage. The bathroom was very open, so quite unpractical and embarrassing towards your travel companion if you have to go Number 2.
During one of our nights, water came running down the wall from the shower (or maybe even toilet!!) from a room upstairs, spattering right onto one of the beds in our room. When I went to inform the staff, the only girl available didn't speak enough English to understand me and by the next morning we were told there was nothing they could do about it.
On the bright side, the massages were nice for just 250B for a full hour and the restaurant has a nice broad menu. Especially the Thai breakfast options are highly recommended: the stuffed breakfast omelet, the muesli and the porridge. The juice blends are also nice, but they tend to serve you whatever they have left instead of the mix you actually ordered.
In short: our stay at Shanti Lodge wasn't a very positive experience, which also negatively influenced our first impressions of Bangkok. Next time we'll try our luck elsewhere, as I'm definitely not coming back here!
