Beyond the cluttered streets of Pratunam, lies Victory Monument, a local-oriented area with shopping and eating intended for Thai & the expats who live there. The geographic center of the city, Victory Monument is a major transfer hub for commuters. It is also the place where van services pick up and drop of weekenders destined for the gulf islands and beach resorts. Food is plenteous and inexpensive in the form of sidewalk restaurants & indoor restaurants, especially along tree-lined Soi Rangnam with tons of shopping circumventing the sidewalks around Victory Monument and in and along the adjacent shopping plazas and avenues.
I gave this area a neutral rating as its tourist value is not much to speak of while, if you are longing to get a more authentic feel of a neighborhood in Bangkok (albeit urban), complete with street vendors and expats who aren't afraid to rough it, and if the hawkers and in your face selling tactics of Silom and Patpong have worn away your nerves, then a stroll around the area might be worth a look.
