“Maybe the Best Hostel in the Worst Location in Bangkok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

So first don't stay on Khao San Rd. unless you are all about partying and getting messed up with a thousand other people. One woman I dealt with while staying here was nice, other staff were very rude and acted as if getting off their backsides to help me get my key was such a bother (it was their policy to keep the keys to deter sex tourism, which some staff may infer that is the reason that you came to Bangkok like they did with me). Food was mediocre and the travel agency in the lobby of the guesthouse either doesn't know anything or are trying to scam you, but this is common in Bangkok so do your research. However, the rooms weren't terrible and you can walk to the Palace, Wat Pho, and other major attractions. Also, they had some of the cheaper prices in the area.

Stayed for just one night. You really don't get your money worth for the 550thb they ask for. Small, old and not very clean rooms. Really dirty corridors. Look elsewhere.

The location was geat, and it was cheap, but...

The room (stayed in 405) was really hot because it was a fan room for 400 baht, and there were so many ants that entered our bags and shoes that we had to disassemble them and turn the inside out.

The heat in the room was so uncomfortable, that it felt so good just sticking your head out the window or stepping out in the hallway.

I, my girlfriend and her brother booked by phone from Chang Rai two days before a triple room and arrived in BGK at 5am after a 16 hours bus ride. First it was very hard to find and when we did they said the check out was at 1pm so we would have to wait until there to have the room. They weren't very friendly but told us we could leave the bag and have a walk in Kao San rd to spend time.
At 1pm we came back and everything had changed. There was no room for us anymore, only a double with a spare bed. We went to check the room and there was practically no room for another bed (apart from having a lot of sand on the ground and a dirty toilet). Soon an old matt of 2 cm thick was taken from the ground on the corridor (god knows how long it was there for) and squeezed into the only empty meter in the room. Since we were already exhausted and we would leave 7am next day we decided to stay and when we went to check in the new surprise came: they charged one double room plus an extra bed, which was much more expensive than the triple room we booked.
I asked to talk to the manager and a very angry and rude girl came saying that if we didnt want then there was a lot of people who were waiting. And despite the coackroaches in the room in fact it was always full so I recommend for whoever goes to bangkok make a good research before falling into this kind of trap in New Joe Guesthouse and other dodgy places.

This was our first stop travelling, recommended by a friend. It was very close to backpacker central, (2 min walk) ko san road. It was relatively quiet compared to the main street. We had a room with fan and hot water. Water wasn't hot, but to be honest you don't need it anyway. There are free lockers for those staying there, but be sure to bring your own padlock. Very good value for money, if you are slumming it I would recommend.

Firstly ignore all the "hard to find" reviews! Take a taxi/ Tuk tuk to Khao San Rd police station then as you walk along you'll see a big sign for the guesthouse, then it's less than 5min walk. I paid 350Bht per night and got a double room as the singles were all pre-booked! They allowed me to check in 15mins early and you even get to inspect the room before you pay. The tour agent is very good and always seemed busy! The food is out of this world and reasonable priced! Internet is well priced at 1Bht per min (Min 10 mins). The staff are friendly and quick enough to help but don't expect much from the manager who just points and grunts. The rooms are good enough for what you pay but the lock on my door didn't work so take your own padlock for your door and one for the safety box at reception which is free of charge!

This place located along small alley, so it was really hard to find it. We booked the triple bedroom 3 weeks before check in, but when we reached there, the room was not ready yet, so they put us into twin bedroom with extra bed. That was a nightmare, because the room was too small for 3 of us, and our movement was limited. The toilet was small and the bed was quite hard, we didn't have a nice sleep. The next day we move to other hotel.

We tried to book a tour to phuket, but the tour desk's staff just perfunctory us.

Anyway i must recommend their restaurant, i like their environment and food. Don't forget their Thai massage (1 hr for 180 baht), more cheaper than outside + good massage. Even i moved to other hotel, but i still came back for their food and massage.
