“Not so good anymore”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2006

We have just returned from the Buddy Hotel in Khao San, it has changed a fair bit since my last visit a couple of years ago - it used to be the betst on the road but unfortunately it has been left to run down a bit, it def needs a bit of a make over, our deluxe room was quite tattya dn dirty with holes in the bedding etc, also the aircon unit just fell from the ceiling in the night and they just left it like that for our whole stay. We stayed in a standard and deluxe, dont be fooled by any differnece, the deluxe just has a bigger balcony apparently , not that this is required on the back streets oh Khao San . Location is great right on the road but I dont think the cost reflects the hotel now- Needs a good clean up and then it can be justified.

The Buddy Lodge is one of the few hotels on Kho San Road. There are plenty of guesthosues and hostels. We stayed here for about $50 US a night simply because of location. It is close to a few landmarks (the Grand Palace and Wat Po). It is also directly on Kho San Road which has tons and tons of backpackers, but a long with it, tons of ATM's, shopping. You have to be prepared to deal with the ton of these people walking around along with the noise that comes it. I'm saying I wouldn't recommend it to Grandpa for example.

The hotel itself looks like in old building which has been beautifually redone into an art-deco type hotel. The rooms are decently appointed and contain a mini-fridge and safe. They give out some tolietries and there is cable TV with a few english channels. I was very happy with the room itself with the exception of the shower. There was hardly any water pressure and there is not a consistant water tempurature. A breakfast buffet is included which was decent. There is also a nice pool on the roof which can be used to cool off from the hot Bangkok weather. Two free bottles of water were provided daily.

The service from the front staff was great as well as the house keeping people. They would help whenever they could. I would tip the housekeepers well.

The biggest problem with this hotel is that there is construction of a new building next door which is EXTREMELY LOUD between hours 6AM-6PM. If you are like us, you will like to sightsee in the AM and come back to the hotel from 11AM-3PM when it is extremely hot and shower and take a nap. That was IMPOSSIBLE. The noise is unbearable. When we complained, they switched us to a room across the halll the next day and that was pleasant, but you could still hear the noise from across the building.

Therefore, with the large amoutn of housing options in the Kho San area I would avoid the Buddy Lodge until construction of that new building has been completed. By the looks of the construction progress, I would suspect a year. The foundation hasn't even been done yet!

If you don't know where to go when first getting into Bangkok, then this is a good start. Located in the heart of the backpackers ghetto in Banglamphu on Koh Sahn Road, you'll get safe, decent rooms with a fantastic 5th-floor swimming pool. A warm shower is a luxury, but the beds were firm and everything else okay. And it's easy to reach from the airport, either by taxi (they all know this road) or airport bus. Taxi should be about 350 Baht including airport fee & tolls.

We stayed at Buddy Lodge for 4 nights at the beginning of our trip. The location and rooms were great. We arrived after midnight following a long flight. KSR was in full swing and I wondered if I'd made the right choice. We had two rooms near the back of the hotel and they were quiet and clean -- better than I had imagined. Our teenagers had an adjoining room. The small pool was a nice plus for an afternoon cool down. Despite all the negatives written about KSR, we enjoyed the atmosphere and availability of services, shopping, people watching, etc. Would be happy to stay there again in the future. Easy 15 min. walk to the Grand Palace and Wat Po.

  • Liked — Nice rooms for the price in convenient location
  • Disliked — No complaints
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a room away from the street if you want to avoid street noice.

We stayed here at the start and end of our Thailand trip, and looked forward to coming back for the last night of the holiday! It's in a great location on the Khao San Road - step out the door to find yourself surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants. Very easy to get around as there are always loads of taxis and tuk tuks waiting outside in the street. It's also really good value for the location. We were lucky and both stays had rooms towards the back of the hotel so they were quiet, away from the bustle of the street. And the roof top pool is a real bonus. Breakfast included and was fine. Staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms themselves were very clean, cool and relaxing. Would definitely stay here again and would recommend.

Very comfortable rooms, lovely pool, nice breakfast, good value for money. Stayed here once, would stay here again without a doubt.

The winning deal with this place is that it's in the middle of Khao San, which gives you either an insight in the backpacking centre of the universe or alternatively a blast from the past if you've spent time here before (only this time you can enjoy your hotel room). Of course many people love to hate Khao San, and it doesn't offer a lot of insight into the genuine Bangkok, but the place is a sight in itself. If it turns out you hate it you can just go back to your comforable room...
