Description: Magical underground cabaret full of mystery, romance, jazz, reminiscent of Shanghai 1930. Maggie Choo's was named after Shanghai cabaret owner who fled her hometown in 1931 following the Japanese invasion that tore the city. Shortly after arriving in Bangkok, she found a 19th century Thai Chinese shoe box restaurant crammed into a basement 10 meters below Silom road serving authentic Thai chinese shophouse food. When one day, she discovered behind the walls in the corner of the restaurant an entrance that lead to a derelict 19th century East India company bank built in 1847 used for storing porcelain and spices that the British used to carry back to England for Queen Victoria, her past caught up with her and she converted the old bank into a cabaret, just like when she used to back in Shanghai. Today the cabaret is yet to be revived again...

“A step back in time and a feast for the senses!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

After a big week in Bangkok I was so ready for bed following dinner the other night. My colleagues were urging me to come out and my will power stayed in tact until one of them suggested a "1930s Shangahi-style bar". I knew I had a to go.

Maggie Choo's is just breathtaking. The second you enter and walk down the wooden stairs into the themed restaurant you know you are about to be wowed.

The first thing to greet you as you enter the dark and mysterious bar is an immaculately dressed girl swinging on a swing, and as your eyes get used to the light you notice that more girls are lying across the bars, piano and more swings. OK this may sound slightly tacky or dodgy, but somehow it's not.

The bar is surrounded by a cage and the staff are busy preparing all manner of cocktails for the thongs of people.

There's live music with a grand piano... the music was a little odd with a European guy playing some soft electronic music, which gave a strange modern edge to the place.

Everything about this place is done well - the atmosphere is just spectacular, the drinks are great, it's got a great mood - I even got a go on one of the swings (by Australian standards I expected to be told to get off immediately, but it seems that anything goes here!)

Definitely worth a visit.

“Very cool vibe but.... there's always a but... :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

First of all the good. The decor is the nicest i've seen in Bangkok. They hit the mark on achieving the 1920's theme in Shanghai. The actual women props situated throughout the place decked out in their Chinese garb makes up for lulls in the lack of walk-in eye candy. The drinks are good. This is definitely a cocktail place so venture out away from the usual beer if that's your drink of choice. The place didn't strike me as a pickup joint unless you hang out around the bar area. The table gatherings are fairly intimate and not something you could just crash and seem to be more reserved for a group of 4+ people to chat among themselves.

Okay the bad... the music was horrible! What do you think you'll hear when I described the theme above? I bet you would not have guessed some electro autotuned guy singing god knows what on a mic! I mean could they have picked any less of a theme than what they were trying to achieve? Anything else would have been better than an autotune singer! I would have liked to have heard the nice piano they got in the place backed up by some jazz ensemble .

I'll go back and I am hoping the music selection was a lapse in judgment on the theme otherwise may not be repeating visits subsequently.

“Awesome concept, sexy sophisticated atmosphere, good drinks, fashionable crowd, high prices as should be expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

My first time to Maggie Choo's was a few weeks ago and we've been back twice since then. In all the time I spend in New York, San Fran, and Miami, I have never been to a place oozing with this much original personality and ambiance. And this is especially true considering it's a theme concept that transports you back to the glamour eta of Shanghai 1930s.

Yes, it's expensive but you'll get it once you visit. It should be expensive. The fitout and decor is thoughtful, creative, and immaculate. It's fun without being campy. It's elegant without being stuffy. It's sexy without being seedy. Can you tell how much I love this place? Drinks are good, the crowd is fashionable, and the attitude is playful. If you go, look good or you'll feel out of place. See you at happy hour.

“Place to see, and be seen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

This delightful bar tucked away next to the slightly faded Novotel Silom has paid attention to the details. Every touch makes you feel like you are hidden in a turn of the century Shanghai opium den. This is the type of place where you'll want to hang out a while, but your wallet will hate you. Look out for the ladies swinging from swings and lazing on the bar, but in a very classy way. A perfect place to take friends on their second or third night in Bangkok. The noodles next door are also, pricey, but perfectly tasty. Downside? The food is extremely average and also, again, extremely over-priced so save your stomach and head somewhere else in Silom for your meal. The other downside is there are too many staff who don't really know what they're doing. A bit of training would be the cherry on the cake, oh, and less snobbery too.

“Fantastic new Bar in town!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

Had a couple of drinks there and the atmosphere they create is amazing! Although the drinks are quite overpriced, it is defenately worth it!

For me a new hotspot in town!
