“Worth searching for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

If you're looking for outstanding Thai food, good service and pleasant entertainment, Yok Krok is well worth the struggle to locate (hidden away, immediately past the MacDonald's on Ratchapruek Road, with a slightly hidden entrance, before you reach the overpass going over Boromrachananee Road).

They don't make any efforts to advertise or attract foreigners (their clientele appears to be about 98 percent Thais) and the ambiance is nothing special (perhaps generously described as a metal pole shed with lighting) but the place is packed every night.... for good reason. The food is superb. We've eaten there many, many times (one of our favorite restaurants in Bangkok) and nearly everything we've tried is excellent. Fish and seafood are great. Pork dishes (including deep-fried pork knuckle) are very tasty. Vegetables fresh. Beer is ice cold and inexpensive (less than 100 baht for a large bottle). This is one of the few restaurants in Bangkok featuring a San Miguel promo girl, working alongside those for Heinekin, Chang, Singha and the ubiquitous Tiger girls.

For being as busy as this place always is, the service is outstanding. Not many of the waiters/waitresses speak English, but they will find someone who can if you need help, and the staff are all extremely friendly.

They have live entertainment every night, including a array of bands and singers, magic shows, acrobats/contortionistsand, and the occasional so-called (Thai) "comedy" acts (which you will probably hope are not scheduled when you're there!). The lead music groups all have good to better singers who perform mostly in English. Until recently, they had a regular group of performers with the absolute best lead female Thai singer that we've ever heard; unfortunately, the group reportedly broke up recently and no longer performs at Yok Krok. The restaurant seems to be on the search for suitable replacement entertainment, and although not as good as the "old" group, their current line-up is still good.

Prices at Yok Krok are very reasonable. Combine the outstanding value with the excellent food and service, and you can overlook the lack of ambiance. The place is well worth searching for. The advantage is once you've found it, it will be much easier to locate for your next return visit.... which you will almost certainly want to make.
