“Absolutely not the best place in Bangkok...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2013

Hostel located above a big restaurant in the street (by the way, you can eat the same food in the same street for half price...). I slept in one of the cheapest room and I understand why. Nothing in the room except 2 beds and one fan (which is not enough due to the hot temperature and very noisy) and it smelt very bad. So, good for the location but not for the rest... Above all, avoid the room 21 !!

I've stayed in a number of the ultra-cheap Bangkok flophouses, and Green House is miles above. However, it's not a $30, $60 or $100 per night hotel room. Green House has a walk-up 20% discount if you book in person, making a single fan room with shared bathroom 288 baht - less than $10 a night. (When traveling to Bangkok for more than a day or two, I highly recommend only pre-booking your first night, then spend an hour or two the first day walking around looking for deals. The Khao San Road area has tons, and you'll likely find just the right combination of price, facilities and cleanliness to suit you.)

It's not the cheapest in Khao San Road, but it's pretty darn good, everything is clean, the staff are helpful and friendly, the restaurant/lounge area is big with plenty of tables (and a decent number of power points/outlets) for hanging out. Which you'll need to do if you want to use the free wifi, as it doesn't work in many of the rooms (the cheapest ones, anyway). You don't have to buy anything if you're a guest, so you can settle in and watch the party go by in front of you while you surf the Internet. Make sure to bring insect repellant of some sort, though, as the mosquitos can be bad the moment the temperature drops.)

When you're ready to go sightseeing, many of Bangkok's top sites are nearby. If you're looking for the gay nightlife, though, you probably want to stay in Silom/Sathon. It's quite a haul from here to any of the gay clubs or bathhouses (although Grindr and Scruff can hook you up with the discreet gay guys who happen to be sitting at the next table).

It is the usual bare-bones, concrete-block style Asian cheap hotel, though. No one expects that you'll be spending much more time in your room than it takes to sleep, shower and change clothes.

Right across the street is the Vientang Hotel, where you can pay 1900 baht per night for a desk and a chair and a blanket and a dresser and a TV and all those other things some people need to have in a hotel.

BTW, if you need/want/enjoy breakfast buffet, I recommend Vientang's basic-but-good Asian-style breakfast for 250 baht. Made-to-order eggs, French toast and pancakes, ham and sausage, a selection of Thai dishes, small salad bar, those lovely little Chinese donuts, fruit and juice, coffee and tea, cereal, yogurt, toast, pastries. Not a bad deal given that most places (including Green House) will charge you 119 baht for one small breakfast.

Thanks, Green House! I had a great stay.

Room Tip: The twin-aircon-shared-bath rooms are a good deal if there are two of you and you really want A/C.

Green house hostel is located in the happening place of Bangkok, Khao san road. In one of the parallel roads, very much walkable distance. We stayed here for one night, though rooms are small, its cozy. There are shared bathrooms, clean. The hotel has an inhouse restaurant, you get a discount from the counter if you mention that you are staying over in the room.

This hotel is also very near to the Grand palace and temple of reclining buddha. We walked to these places from the hotel. Its a 15 mins walk actually

If you are looking for a cheap stay, this is it

Room Tip: Try taking the room on the 1st floor, else you need to walk to the 2nd floor, there is no lift

The hotel is standard sort of Bangkok guesthouse fare. Clean, basic. I got the twin air-conditioned room. The hotel did not provide a blanket in the room--only a thin sheet, so I went to the front desk to request a blanket, and they wanted to charge me 50 THB for one but I wouldn't pay it, so they gave me a "blanket" anyways. But the "blanket" was just another sheet. There are actually no blankets in their linen closet, as I went with the employee to get the extra "blanket." Seems to be a ploy to charge people for an AC room but have them not use it. So if you want a blanket to sleep with, go to another hotel! :(

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel if you require anything other than a thin sheet to sleep with.

Location is nice as its just off from Khao San, the Green house restaurant was nice & clean & reasonably priced. Hostel social area was nice & had a tv. Room was terrible...... solid mattress, no window, no air con, nothing else in the room other than a shelf! Didn't sleep for 2nights & got a bad back..... would rather sleep on a brick!

Situated very well for the lively action in koh San road. The downstairs area is good for hanging out. The rooms are basic but are sufficient for a night or two. Overall I would recommend if you are on a budget or just want a base and nothing fancy.

Spent 4 nights between aug-sept. regularly ate at the restaurant downstairs which offers a 10% discount to hostel guests (unsure whether this is seasonal.) Fantastic, great value food served and super friendly staff! (Try the fruit shakes!). Room and ensuite was generally clean, working air con. Pleasantly surprised how quiet the place was; far enough from khao San to inaudible (mostly) yet just a 2 minute walk (using susie walking street). Good value room overall, will stay on return to bkk hopefully.
