In total I stayed in 3 hotels during my stay in Thailand and I have to say that the Indra was the best out of all of them.
Don't let the outside of the hotel fool you. It may look like "Ghetto Central" what with all the dogs wandering the streets and sleezy taxi drivers wanting to take you places you don't wanna go, but once you get inside the hotel you find that it's actually quite beautiful.
We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, the foyer is gorgeous as you walk into the hotel and the rooms were really quite good.
They provide you with the complimentary tea and coffee and of course drinking water (which we thought was fabulous seeing as one of the hotels we stayed at only gave us water. No tea and coffee were provided which was a nightmare for coffee-holics like myself in the mornings) The pillows were very hard but the bed was quite comfortable. The room comes with air con, your own private safe and a mini bar, but the drinks are at astronomical prices for Thailand, so buy your drinks downstairs at the 7/11
The bathroom was quite good, there was a bath with a shower over head, but our bath plug leaked and didn't hold the water in. The soap holder was a bit mouldy too, but after the other hotels we stayed in this wasn't a problem at all.
The location of the Indra is BRILLIANT because you can basically walk to the shopping malls (Siam Central, Platinum, Pratunam Mall, Mah Boo Kroong or MBK as its popularly known as) however if you can't handle walking in the heat you can always catch bus number 204 which stops directly outside each shopping mall. If you're looking to see the Patpong nightmarkets you can catch the 514 from the same bus stop. The bus can be caught directly on the opposite side of the street from the hotel. Coming back to the hotel is a breeze because the buses stop right infront of the hotel. The buses in Bangkok are fantastic!! They're not primitive (as I had been advised earlier) and they have great air con!! If you're looking to save money for shopping catch the bus! If you're looking to see the temples in Ratanakosin you can catch the number 60 bus which stops directly infront of Platinum mall. Be warned the 204 and 514 do not stop infront of this shopping mall, but its not far from the hotel at all. If you're wanting more information on how to get to places via bus or skytrain the hotel staff will tell you where to go and how to get there. If in doubt catch a taxi, but make sure you ask them to PUT THE METER ON!!
The Indra has its own shopping mall, Mcdonalds and other fast food joints and even a foreign currency exchange, but BE WARNED the pickpocketers are DEFINITELY at play down here so hold your bags, wallets and other personal items close by. The Pratunam markets are littered all the way down the street right infront of the indra which makes the walk to the shopping malls seem very short. The rooms didn't smell musty or mouldy at all.
