“FANTASTIC FOOD”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

Excellent location central to the skyrail so easy to get anywhere, pools huge even though old and the food is the best we ate in Bangkok, the staff aren't overly friendly but not rude either.
The beds are lovely and the rooms clean

We’ve stayed for 4 nights in this hotel which still keeps his original style of the 50s. Old school colonial deco! The building is nice and there is also a quite big swimming pool (the first of Bangkok) surrounded by a garden with tables and hammocks where you can enjoy some drinks from the restaurant.

For 1070 Baths we get the 3 first nights a big family room (because we’ve been upgraded) and the last night (when we came back from a trip in the northern Thailand), we get the usual double bed room you have for this price (with AC). In the room the deco is quite sober, but there’s nothing bad to say except that the shower wasn’t really hot (more warm) but it doesn’t really matter as it’s really hot outside. The 2 rooms were really clean and I think this is a really good value for money compared to others hotels in Sukhumvit.

In addition, there is a restaurant just for customers, again great value for money: for less than 7 USD pp, we had each one main Thai course+rice, and one large beer…you can’t find better in the area. And it is quality food. And Anong, the manager of the restaurant is really nice and friendly.

The other staffs also gave us lots of tips to facilitate our stay in Bangkok (concerning taxi, tuk-tuk, rip-off, etc.). Very honest people.

The hotel also kept one of our pieces of luggage for 3 weeks for free in a safe storage room. I was more confident to put the baggage there than at the airport.

In its category (budget travelling), I think it’s the best place to stay.

Nice rooms, good location and lots of good vibes and history.

It is one of those places slighlty decadent but with so many memories that you almost forgive some of their flaws such as the long waited renovation. Ive been there one year ago, maybe they have already done it.

Location is good, quiet neighbourwood. The restaurant is also very good with nice staff. Swimming pool and garden along with the entrance hall make it a very beautifull place to go. Eventually just for a lunch. See for yourserf.

Stayed there nearly two weeks. It's a unique place decorated with love for the small details, which create a feeling of being back in the 1930s. After travelling around Thailand we found that there was no other hotel with so much charm. The restaurant offers a great variety of both western and Thai dishes. Especially for vegetarians you won't find more options anywhere else. Spend some time reading one of the three big menues to learn all about the Thai cuisine. The rooms are simple but neat and clean, again with some special features as for example four different pillows to chose from on each bed! The location is quiet but only five minutes walk from the Skytrain, which takes you anywhere within no time. All in all it's definitely worth a stay.

Atlanta is a nice hotel, which isn`t really central located, but good to reach with a taxi. The people at atlanta work there for ages, which makes them really trustworthy. The style of the hotel is nice, but it could really use a renovation. They try to tell their morals on every place in the hotel, which can become a bit annoying (guests know that stealing a menucard is not a good thing to do, we assume) the great amount of cats and dogs in the hotel is something you need to hotel. The turtles in the garden are really cool though!! Great place to visit with kids, only the pool is a bit dirty..

Stayed one night & it was an experience. Main reason for staying here was the fact that they could guarantee us a check in at 9 which was important after the overnight train from Chiang Mai (probably because they are never busy!). We stayed in one of the cheapest rooms, on the top floor & the long walk up the 4 flights was a bit of a pain at times, especially when we left at 6am the next day with no one to help with the bags. Front desk staff weren't very helpful but the restaurant staff were. My eldest son wasn't feeling too well in the evening & the elderly waitress fussed over him like his grandma:). Food was fine, nothing special but quite nice. Pool area was a bit shabby & the gardens smelt of the terrapins but fine for an hour or so's down time. The cats were a bit hit with the kids. The lobby & restaurant were like stepping back in time. Room was ok, bathroom new & very clean. Perfectly functional for one night. Decent value for money, especially if like me you are travelling with kids & need 3 in a room & don't want to pay the exorbitant extra bed rate that many hotels charge. Overall you get what you pay for.

The Altlanta staff was really helpful and nice. Lobby and restaurant is nice, and it takes you back to the old Thailand. Thai food in the resturant was ok, but western food was terrible.
the room was fine, except the bathroom. Bathroom felt dirty. It was OK to stay here for a short period but I would not recommend to stay at Atlanta for a longterm stay in Bangkok.

The garden in the backyard is a lovely place, but note this:
(!) backyard could have been very nice if the place was cleaned up and the turtles (stinky) should be removed. The pool needs some upgrading. Tiles falling off and it was kind of muddy. I did not swim here because I feared to be ill.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The historic Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok is, literally, untouched by modern pop culture. Walking into The Atlanta is like walking into another world, a long lost world. Most of what a guest sees and hears is old and classic - and authentic. ***The Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok, founded in 1952, features many superlatives, notably, the most photographed and oldest unaltered hotel lobby in Thailand, the first hotel swimming (diving) pool in Thailand, the largest selection of Thai vegetarian dishes in the world, a unique jungle-like garden right in the middle of Bangkok. The western menu features dishes made in the 1950s style - dishes that were on the original menu of The Atlanta, and prepared in the same way. ***The historic Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok has strict policies: sex-tourists, drug users, trouble-makers, and undomesticated people are not welcome. Any of these found on the premises are dealt with summarily. Because of these strict policies, The Atlanta Hotel has many detractors or even enemies. The Atlanta Hotel upholds its principles and policies without compromise. As of 1st September 2013, smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on the premises. ***The Atlanta Hotel is also home to destitute cats and terrapins. Injured and abandoned cats seem to find their way to The Atlanta. Many are rescued from elsewhere. There are at the time of writing 36 cats. Some live in an enclosure on one side of the garden; others live in the staff section of the hotel. The terrapins are all rescued and saved from loss of habitat. There are at the time of writing 27 terrapins. They live well in and around the pond of the jungle-like garden of The Atlanta. Two staff are employed full-time to look after the animals, and visiting vets often volunteer their services, which The Atlanta welcomes. There is a celebrated drawing by a regular guest of The Atlanta of the lobby featuring cats lying on the round sofa. The caption reads (in Italian), "Cats, the real guests of The Atlanta." Guests of The Atlanta are typically animal lovers. *** The Atlanta, being at the bottom of a lane, has no passing trade. All our guests are either regulars or friends of regulars. The Atlanta has many returning guests who have been coming to The Atlanta since the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and, of course, much later. ... more   less
