“October stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Arrival –
We caught a taxi from Banyan Tree (we change hotels for a different view). The taxi took us to the Shangri la hotel instead of the Krungthep Wing. Not knowing this we tried to check in and were told we were in the wrong building, the front desk arranged for the hotel Tuk Tuk to take us to the Krungthep Wing. Check in was quick, Frank the Operations manager introduced himself and offered his help during our stay.

Room –
We were taken up to our room, we had booked a Deluxe Balcony suite, one of the main features of this room is that it comes with a personal butler. The butler came to introduce herself and this was the last we saw of her. This room had a Huge king size bed, a small sitting area and a balcony with great views of Chao Phraya river.
I had requested a high floor and we were given the 16th floor (top floor). As this was a special occasion trip, we were given a really nice box of chocolate (a block of choc and a large chocolate heart). Very yummy!!
The room offers free soft drink (and water) in the mini bar, you can call to get this refilled all day. which was a nice touch!

Service –
The service was very different to the Banyan Tree. We felt more like a number than a guest. It was nice to have a butler but we never used the service. It wasn’t horrible service but felt they were too busy to stop and say Hello.
I did have severe back pain while in Thailand and had a look through the guest compendium, in the housekeeping section it offers a hot water bottle (press 0) when I called, no one could understand what I was asking for, I got put through to the nurse who said over and over they could only offer a cold pack, after speaking to 3 different people I gave up.

Club room –
The Club lounge was really nice. The view of the grounds and river were lovely. The selection of brekky and evening canapés was really good! Except one evening they served chocolate mousse, it had lumpy bits of jelly/gelatine(??), I thought this might have been one cup so I tried another and so did my husband and it looked as if all of them had this lump of jelly at the bottom, it wasn’t very nice..

Pool –
We didn’t use the pool but they did have 2 pools one for the Krungthep Wing and another for the Shangri La hotel. Personally I prefer the Shangri la pool. It is much big and better.

Food –
The club lounge Brekky & evening canapés were really nice, they had a good spread set up. We did have a bit of a bad experience after having dinner at Salathip -. I bugged my husband to try the Salathip as i thought from the moment i booked at the Shangri-La it looked amazing. He wasn’t feeling very well but said okay we can try it. We decided to see if we could walk in without a booking, this wasn’t a problem and we got a table right away, it’s such a beautiful restaurant. We were given the menu and told about the set menu as my husband wasn’t feeling very well we ordered from the Al a Carte menu. Once we made our order we felt as if we weren’t good enough to be dining there because we didn’t order the set menu. It seemed to get worse from there. we asked for the bill and the (female) waitress said "oh what you are finished, no desert" huffed and walked away. We didn’t feel very welcome there.

Spa –
We did not try the spa as we found it very very expensive even by Australian Standards (which I have since been told they are looking to review this)

Location –
The location seems to be ideal. It is just around the corner from the BTS (Bangkok Sky Train) and right on the river. It seems to be pretty easy to get around. There is a Robinson just around the corner as well.

Staff worth special mention –
Joey in the Club lounge, he was very friendly and chatty.
The Security man who salutes you each time you go past.

General Summary –
They offer to have 2 items for pressed per stay (Previous hotel offered 4 items per day), feel that this is a poor.
A few things that we didn’t like –
There is no ventilation in bathroom which can be a bit awkward if you’re sharing a room.
The room offers a map for $250 baht but there is nothing to say that you can get a free map at the concierge.
There is no pillow menu (that we could find)
The pressure in the shower is awful!
Overall there were a few hiccups but it was a good stay.

Room Tip: Club room is always the better option as you get the better benefits. The Krungthep Wing. seems a...

“This really is a five star hotel..and more”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

This is a hotel that says it is five star and it actually is!

We checked in last week and where offered an upgrade from our river view room to a river view room in the Kungthrep wing. In effect this is like another hotel joined to the Main hotel..however the rooms are just as nice ( electric curtains, etc)...and also have a balcony which the main hotel does not. You have your own concierge etc reception staff etc.
the added benefit of taking that wing is:
You get free breakfast.not a rubbish buffet but hot food to order and also a comprehensive buffet.in a smart dining room overlooking the garden
You have butler who will arrange stuff and also bring you a free cocktail between 5.30 and 7.30along with canapés
All Soft drinks are free around the Kungthrep pool and from your minibar
Free wi fi and use of internet free if you have no computer
Between 5.30and 7.30 all alcoholic drinks are free in the lounge with a selections of All you can eat canapés........and every afternoon a full afternoon tea with food is served free in the lounge.

You can of course still use the facilities of the main wing pool .bars etc..
Service is faultless.we would stay here without the Kungthrep upgrade ...but is is a good deal

Room Tip: Accept a room in the Kungthrep wing with all the benefits and accept a bit of a walk if you have any...

“Shangri La is sublime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Shangri La Bangkok is as close to the perfect hotel as you are likely to find. You would need to be terminally grumpy to find fault here. We stayed for five days in the Krungthep wing of the hotel in October 2012. This wing has its own entrance lobby, swimming pool, restaurant and staff. Krungthep wing guests have the run of the entire Shangri La but enjoy complimentary high tea every afternoon and cocktails from 5.30 to 7.30. The staff are friendly and efficient and seem to be able to anticipate a guest's every whim. The staff in the rest of the Shangri La are equally charming and professional. This is a great hotel.

Room Tip: The Krungthep Wing of the Shangri La is a stand alone hotel in the grounds of the Shangri La. Includ...

“First class in heart of Bangkok”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

Checked in for a long weekend in Bangkok and a city visit.

Booked a club lounge room to enjoy the facilities of the club and the evening happy hour.

First class service from check in till check out. The staff throughout is excellent, from the lounge, to the housekeeping as well as in the gym.

The rooms are fairly spaceous and offers good views of the river, with beds of superior quality.

The hotel location is smack in the middle of downtown, so some traffic should be expected to/ from the airport, however, and hour should do.

Relatively easy to get around from the hotel, either by taxi or river boat.

My compliments go out to the staff and management of the Shangri- La Bangkok for making my stay an excellent experience.

Would not hesitate to come and visit again!

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room with river view.

“An old favourite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012 via mobile

Fantastic position on chao praya river. Staff cannot do enough for you, food exeptional, especially breakfast. Horizon club worth checking out for afternoon tea and evening cocktails. We check into this hotel every year around christmas time for four or five days and have never been disappointed.
