I stayed at the Grand Mercure on SOI 22/Sukhumvit for 5 nights from: Dec. 5th thru Dec. 10th 2009. I was visiting Bangkok for the 2nd time on my vacation – the 1st time about 25 years ago, and at that time I had stayed at The New Peninsula Hotel near PatPong on Silom/Suriwong. The front desk staff was so courteous that my heart melted instantly. The Thai ladies working behind the counter were not only gorgeous looking but also bright and intelligent. I love Thai people as they are so friendly, courteous and polite. No wonder, Thailand stand at #4 on Forbes Magazine list as the friendliest nation. The US stands at #10. What I can’t understand is why Australia is at #3 on the same list? That was puzzling to me. Huh! Anyway, back to the hotel. The room was clean, bathroom was clean, and all the toilet essential including toothbrush and paste were laid out there for the guests to use. The view was okay, but I wasn’t there for the view. The breakfast at the hotel was simply put: just scrumptious! They had plenty of dishes out, but my gaze fell on the few Indian curry dishes, which were simply gorgeous in taste. As you exit out of the hotel entrance, you’ll be hounded by a horde of taxi drivers wanting to offer you their services ranging from massage parlors to city tours. I wasn’t interested in any as I had booked my tours thru my travel agent in the US. These are very nice Thai people, and I don’t have anything against them as they are out there to earn their livelihood – so feel free to indulge yourself if you want to hire their services. As you exit onto SOI-22 wand walk towards Sukhumvit road, you’ll encounter numerous British style Pubs, Bars, and Thai Massage Parlors. You’ll hear Thai ladies haggling you to indulge in massage services. Feel free to do so. I also saw quite a few Italian restaurants on SOI 22 as well as Sukhumvit road. I couldn’t understand why were there so many Italian restaurants in this area? Was this an Italian neighborhood? I saw more Brits and Aussies expatriates walking around than Italians in this locality. Though, I would have preferred to see a few English style Fish and Chips restaurants to compliment the Pubs and Bar scene as I’m from the US and am familiar with the Brit Pub grub scene. In final, I want to thank the staff at Grand Mercure for their excellent service. Keep it up guys. I will definitely stay there again – hopefully this time sooner than my last trip.
