I am a seasoned traveler who travels frequently and I usually stay at the at the Novotel or Marriott Executive suites. I decided to check out the Grand president due to the reviews on this site. My booking was for an Opal studio in Tower 3 at about (US) $76 a night. I was shocked at the room at tower 3 due to the poor quality, the small size, old furnishing and therefore requested to cancel my stay. The day shift office manager upgraded my room to the executive suites which was acceptable but not a 4 star room like advertised. The furniture was still old, the sofa had stains and their was no body lotion or room slippers which you expect in most 4 star hotels. I was still wishing to do an early check out or pay a penalty and move to the Marriott Executive suites. The hotel management insisted that I need to contact the booking agency and work out the early check out through them. A lesson learned from this episode was to be selective in which agency you choose to do your bookings. I used a non U.S booking agency known as Agoda and they were the least helpful in answering my request. On the 8th day of my stay, I received an email from Agoda stating that the hotel would not refund me, if I decided to do an early check out. My preferred agency is Orbitz and they have always been willing to charge a penalty and refund the customer if the hotel does not meet the standards or your travel plans change.
On the positive side the hotel did have great room service and friendly staff at the reception. My stay became unpleasant when the night security hassled me because I was entering the hotel with my girl friend. He was joined by the night shift office manager requesting the girls ID and embarrassing me in the lobby front of other guest. This night shirft office manager was unfriendly, speaks no English and tried to charge me a guest charge for inviting my girl friend to a room that was paid for 2 people. Based on this incident, I would never stay at this hotel and would not recommend this place for the lack of professionalism and poor standards. Another lesson learned "you get what you pay for" and I can never imagine this low end behavior at any of the 4 or 5 star hotels I have stayed in the past.
