We booked accommodation at the Baiyoke after scoring a great deal through the travel agent; this is Thailand’s tallest tower, and I have to admit that I was attracted to the novelty factor…..
LATER; we discovered the Baiyoke had received a fair number of bad reviews on several travel review sites. So we arrived at the hotel feeling significant levels of trepidation. We needn’t have worried. We were very pleasantly surprised. Okay, so this hotel won’t suit those travellers who want to have their hands held and be molly-coddled through their stay in Bangkok. The sheer size and subsequent volume of visitors through this hotel make that impossible. Some may perceive it as too impersonal; however it could also be seen as un- intrusive. Our room was impeccably clean and functional, and was the perfect, quiet, air-conditioned haven to escape to after the hustle and bustle of shopping outside!
.Our suite was on the 35th floor and the views were amazing.
Baiyoke has a pool, indoor golf range, gym, beauty salon, and several restaurants, including a 24 hour ‘coffee shop’ that serves everything from hot drinks to sandwiches to full hot meals and cocktails. Its Tom Yum Goong soup was apparently awarded the ‘tastiest in the world’ in a competition last year. It did not disappoint!
We had the buffet breakfast included in our package and it was unbelievable…. A huge array of different (and sometimes unusual) breakfast dishes including freshly made waffles, roti bread, omelettes, curries etc etc. Given that there are a lot of Russian, Eastern European and Japanese guests, the buffet did tend to lean towards those tastes in terms of breakfast offerings. It was disturbing just how quickly I started to look forward to beef curry for breakfast! Like anything, go with an open mind.
The Baiyoke Sky hotel is 88 stories high, with a revolving viewing platform at the top, affording some fantastic views over Bangkok. The outside glass elevator should not be missed.
The lobby is on the 18th floor, and the hotel also has a mini-mart in the lobby with prices quite favourably comparable with convenience stores outside. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus that takes guests to Siam Square, on the hour, up until 7pm.
The hotel has a night market right outside, and is immediately across the road from Indra Square shopping mall, where there are some fantastic bargains on clothing. May I personally recommend the children’s clothing store on the top floor, “Janny”…. I managed to score some incredibly frou-frou dresses for my young nieces for incredibly low prices!
One minor annoyance regard to the Baiyoke Sky Horel was the fact that the elevators were slow and it could be a pain getting to the top floors (restaurants etc) and back due to having to change lifts for different floors, and there were often large tour groups filling the elevators on their way to the viewing platform at the top.
Overall; I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone headed to Bangkok.
