“Not really good enough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

This hotel thinks of itself as one of the great luxury hotels of the world but it isn't. First of all the hotel is on the wrong side of the river which makes going anywhere unpredictable and a chore. It takes at least 15 minutes by boat to get to anywhere. If you go out twice a day sightseeing shopping or dinner you have to add at least an hour in travel time to what you spend if you were staying at the Oriental or the Shangri-La.

The initial room we were given had many problems, both as to wiring, air conditioning and a shower which flooded the bathroom. We were moved to an upper floor luxury suite which was certainly gracious but guests should never have been put in the first room. That said, management was very responsive.

Excellent breakfast buffet but otherwise the food is unremarkable. In general the hotel's atmosphere is generic with no particular sense of being in Thailand or even Asia save for the view of the river.

Excellent staff to greet you at the airport and assist you through departure. They were the best thing about the hotel!

We stayed at Bangkok Peninsula from Dec 20-28, 2012. Again excellent service, superb rooms, very friendly staff. I would like to rate the Pen as one of the very best hotels in Asia. Small minor point is the service at busy times at the pool, the pool team lacks extra hands to get all requests done.

It's so true, you get what you pay for. The Peninsula is luxurious, elegant but not pretentious. It offers a relaxing, pampering and wonderful experience. The check-in desk is always very busy, so that was a bit irritating, but once past there, it was smooth sailing.

The room, a grand deluxe, was very nice. Not large at all, but a great view from the 6th floor. They have 37 floors but they were full so we got the 6th. The bed was extremely comfortable, like sleeping on a cloud. The bathroom was immaculate, with great towels and amenities, big shower and tub, two sinks and private toilet. There was a walk-in closet area with safe (too small for laptops???), shoe cleaning supplies, blow dryer, etc. They provide robes and slippers.

Everything in the room is automated. You can turn everything on or off from beside your bed or at the front door. The curtains are automated, the TV remote is high tech. The channels are the normal ones on the flat screen tv. The placement of the TV was strange. it was to the side of the bed and therefore hard to see without turning your neck. It got a big uncomfortable to watch but who watches TV when there are so many other things to do.

The pool area is divine, but there are really not enough loungers for the hotel's size. We managed to find one every day, but sometimes couldn't get one of their divine sala's with a roof on top to block the sun. there are three pools in the long pool area, and the loungers are really comfortable. When you get there, the pool attendant sets up the lounger for you to insure your comfort. They offer ice water constantly and in the afternoon a very small scoop of ice cream to refresh. They have a restaurant at the pool and sala service. The food is excellent but VERY expensive. The pool goes right out to the river and is beautifully kept and the right temperature. There is also an outdoor jacuzzi.

The gym is very small but has the basics. there were three attendants and me in the gym when I was there. They provide towels, water and headphones. Each piece of equipment has a TV function on it. The changing room has a hot and freezing cold jacuzzi in a very relaxing room, with steam room and sauna. They provide lockers and everything you need for a shower. There is a small little machine that dries out your bathing suit in 10 seconds.

The spa is next door, but at the average price of $200 for a simple thai massage, i chose to go to Healthland and get the same massage for 20 USD. The spa is over priced and empty because of it.

The restaurants are all good. The chinese dim sum lunch is delicious and a lot of food. The evening dinner buffet is fantastic (1880++ baht, about $66 bucks per person), the breakfast is fine, surprisingly lower quality than the other food options. There is plenty there and it is good, but it is very ordinary. They make fresh omelets for you and you do eat right next to the river, so the atmosphere can't be beat!

At night, they have bars in the lobby with live music, and outside by the river and in a small sala above the thai restaurant. Drinks at the river bar are about 10 bucks each, and very weak, and the service at the river bar is terrible! Took an hour to get a second drink. But its because the servers are also working the dinner buffet tables as well and it was very busy so they never came back over to the bar area. They also offer endless cashews to accompany the drinks but you have to ask for them.

There is frequent boat service to the Peninsula pier across the river, where you can get a taxi or to the BTS where you can take a train to the main tourist areas. The boat is very nice and fast.

The hotel is on the Thonburi side of the river, so you need to taxi or boat to anywhere. It does make getting to the main areas a bit of a hike, but the environment of the hotel is so pleasant its worth it.

Everything about this hotel was upscale and relaxed. The personnel were very well trained and eager to please. Check out was about like check in. Very slow with lots of people in line.

But it was the high season.

Room Tip: Any room is a good room. Try to get a higher floor.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

We stayed at the Peninsula Hotel in November 2012. I was very excited to stay at what was supposed to be one of the top hotels in the world. I confirmed and re-confirmed our reservation with an extra bed for our 11-year old son and late arrival. We arrived at the hotel at half past midnight, exhausted from traveling. Nobody took our bags. That's right, in this five star world-calls hotel, there was no one to take our bags and we had to cart all of the bags to the check-in desk. I was very surprised but figured that the bags would then be taken to our room. Not so. After checking in, we were told to take the elevator up and no-one offered to take our bags, nor did anyone show us to the room or explained the amenities in the room (remote control curtains, lights, etc.) I was stunned and wanted to complain but frankly I was too tired and my son too whine. He just wanted to go to bed.

When checking in, I, once again, confirmed that the extra bed was in the room. To my shock, the bed was not there. At this point it is close to 1 a.m. and my son is melting down wanting to go to sleep but he doesn't have a bed. I called downstairs and the bed did arrive 20 minutes later but, I have to ask you, is this the five star service that you would expect from a hotel of this caliber?

To give the hotel its due, the rooms were very nice, the grounds lovely and the pool service attentive. Hence, a three-star experience but not the five star experience that I was expecting.

We stayed 3 nights in November. I had booked The Penninsula for a 40th Birthday as I'd read it was the top hotel, however after I'd booked it there were lots of reviews that the hotel isn't what it used to be and that it was tired and had gone downhill. This just simply isn't true!! This is definitely one of 2 of the best hotels I've stayed in. Beautiful views, stunning rooms, great bars and restaurants and the free boat shuttle service, what's not to like, I definately return.

Very central for all the top ten sightseeing places, we didnt' try the spa, the pool was great and very quiet too. Very recommended.

My work colleagues and I dined at The Peninsula for lunch, it was an overall very enjoyable experience. The staff were very helpful, polite and knowledgeable. We had a light lunch, consisting of one of almost all the dumplings on the menu each. They were all very delicious and each flavour outdid (but did not clash with) the next. Although the meal was pricey, you cannot replace such authentic and flavoursome food,
so the price was reasonable in consideration to the overall dining experience. I would highly recommend to anyone seeking a superb dining experience.

I spent weeks trying to decide between Mandarin, Shangri-la and Peninsula. We knew we wanted to stay on the river, we just couldn't decide between the three. In the end a friend recommended the Pen and I'm so happy we listened to them. It is absolutely perfect.
The room is modern with a beautiful bathroom and separate dressing room. The hotel overlooks the city with a view that you would never get staying on the other side of the river. Some people said this may be an inconvenience but the free shuttle boat runs all day and the journey across the river only takes a couple of minutes so if anything, it works out better.
We dined at both the hotel restaurants on the river, and the food was excellent. The buffet dinner is great value, serving a selection of Thai and Western cuisine. The breakfast is of the best I have come across in hotels.
The spa is beautiful but pricey, however you get the quality you pay for. Wi-fi is free and available throughout the hotel, in addition to their private cars.
Can't recommend this hotel enough.

Room Tip: Definitely recommend a high floor so you get the most from the view.
