This was my 2nd stay at the Plaza Athenee Bangkok, and I was more than satisfied. For starters, the rate I paid was lower than last time. When I checked in, front desk told me I was upgraded to the 23rd floor (last time I was on the 20th floor), also my stay included free breakfast and late checkout till 4 pm. The late checkout proved to be useful as I stayed in the hotel till the afternoon before catching a later flight. After checking in, the front desk staffer led me and carried my suitcase to the room. The room was not much different from the 20th floor, with the same panoramic view of the Ploenchit area and Baiyoke Sky Tower in the distance. Breakfast, like last time, was superb with a huge variety of food. Unlike last time, I did not have a problem with the plug in the bathtub. The bathtub fills up quickly with hot enough water and there is a separate shower stall with great water pressure. I've been in some 5-star hotels where there is only a shower, no bathtub.
One minor annoyance, which I was able to ignore, was a dying battery in the smoke detector. It had a low, sharp sound which appeared irregularly.
The service at the Plaza Athenee Bangkok is what would make me stay here again.

We stayed here for a week when my husband and his colleagues were working in BKK. We had a lovely big room on a business floor and really appreciated all the extras - free bar, afternoon tea, cocktails and canapes, business centre etc. The personal service from staff on this floor was excellent and we were greeted by name in the corridor.
The hotel has some excellent facilities (especially for business) and the amount of food on offer on the restaurant buffets was almost embarrassing! Every possible need and diet is catered for (but there must be a huge amount of waste).
As I was not working I made good use of the very pleasant pool area. I also enjoyed being close to the sky train and shopping centres although on balance we prefer staying near the river as we find it fascinating.
My only gripes were that service at the pool was not very good (slow and unreliable - I often had to go looking for waiting staff, even to sign for my lunch or drink before leaving the pool). I found this surprising in a 5 star hotel which has excellent service in all other areas. The other slight negative was that this is a very corporate hotel and didn't feel particularly Thai to me - it could be anywhere in the world. But this view is probably because I was there purely as a tourist wanting to enjoy Thailand. If you are working then the international corporate efficiency is helpful.

We stayed in the Royal Meridien hotel for two weeks and found everything about our stay exceptional. The rooms, the food and especially the staff were so pleasant and helpful. The whole experience of the Royal Meridien exceeded this. We especially loved the pool and a place where we could escape the big city and completely relax.
