“Fantastic oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2006

Fantastic hotel, Great location with lovely views over the river.

Pools were fab and felt tranquil. Hard to believe you were so close to the hustle of Bangkok.

We got around by river bus and there is a stop right next to the hotel down a little alley - really easy to use.

Rooms were nicely decorated, lovely bathrooms and really friendly helpful staff.

Can't praise it too highly and would definitely stay here again.

Royal Orchid Sheraton

A beautiful riverside hotel I can highly recommend, in Bangkok, is the Royal Orchid Sheraton. Even if you only stay one night in Bangkok I would suggest that you give it a go. All the rooms face the Chao Praya River. We stayed twice during the time of our honeymoon and had two different rooms. The Deluxe Riverview room that we had was a really great size with a spacious bathroom and looked like it might have been renovated recently. The other room we had was a Junior Suite. It was in need of a renovation as it looked quite tired with too much wood panelling. The bathroom was a lot smaller too. Not that I should complain as we were upgraded to this room. There were few things that really made the Royal Orchid Sheraton stand out compared to our last stay a few years ago. There is now an area on the Mezzanine level called Link @ Sheraton. It provides free internet access for wireless notebook computers and about 8 pc’s for those who chose to travel lighter. You can stay on the pc’s for 30mins free. Another selling point was the Towers lounge. At check in we were offered for USD50++ the use of the Towers lounge all day (24th floor lounge that looks out at the river) with free tea & coffee, choice of continental breakfast in the Towers lounge or breakfast in our room or Full Buffet breakfast in the all day dining restaurant called etc.. Between 530pm and 730pm there were free cocktails and canapés in the Towers Lounge. Also included was an hour free internet access and best of all was 12 pieces of clothing freshly laundered. We almost spent the 50 USD doing our laundry, at the hotel prices. The hotel offers a free shuttle boat, to all guests, between the hotel and the Skytrain station which is 15mins one way and operates 7am-7pm daily. We used it daily as it was the most stress free way transport in Bangkok.

We stopped here on our honeymoon for five nights.
It was a good experince:
+Clean, spacious rooms with River views.
+Excellent and helpfull staff
+Food was ok.

+\- Location was good since you could take the local boat transportation right in front of the hotel or the hotels shuttle boat to the nearest skytrain stop.

+With the local boat you could visit most of the sigts e.g. temples and palaces.

-However, the location was a little far away from the night life action and there was no metro or skytrain located within walkin distance of the hotel.

When I first read review about the Royal Orchid Sheraton I was a little apprehensive about staying there. However, upon arriving at the hotel all of those fears were almost instantaneously dispelled. The check-in process was pleasant and the check-in staff were all very friendly and polite. We received a complimentary upgrade to the "Preferred Guest" rooms which immeadiately enhanced my appreciation of this hotel.

The hotel's rooms all offer riverviews, which I am told is unique to this hotel. The The room I stayed in was immaculate and the bed was turned down each day and the bathroom supplies such as shampoo, soap and complimentary bottled water were frequently topped up on a daily basis.

The restaurants in the hotel were very nice, the Thailand Tonight restaurant and theatre by the riverside was especilly good, because on our first night when we arrived, they kept the restaurant open beyond their normal hours, just for us. This type of service was the standard in the hotel, where the staff seemed to go to extra lengths to cater for our needs.

The Lobby Lounge Bar was a relaxing area to rest in after a good meal, with the traditional Thai music played on the harpiscord in the lobby, or the live band playing in the bar adding to the atmosphere.

The free internet service was a welcomed feature, allowing us send messages back to our friends at home.

The next door River City shopping complex provided alternative cuisine and the leisurely opportunity to shop for souveniers as well as antiques. The pier on the riverside terrace allowed convenient access to the river cruises. The Hotel also boasted its own pier which facilitates the hotel's complimentary ferry service.

During our stay we were informed that the hotel was undergoing renovations, though appart from one of the pools being closed, the ongoing construction work was barely noticable.

Overall our stay was extremely enjoyable and we were sad to have to leave. I definately hope to return to this hotel and would highly recommend it.

We were at first a bit leerie in booking into the Royal Orchid Sheraton based on the mixed bag of reviews. My friend and I stayed for 4 nights at the executive tower room at the end of June. We have decided to pay an extra $50US per night to be upgraded. We found the cost very reasonable since it gave us free buffet breakfast (at either the executive lounge or the main dining room), free use of the internet, daily in-room fruit baskets, welcome drinks, and most amazing of all... 6 pieces of laundry per person per day. We have estimated that if we were to actually pay for the hotel laundry service, that alone would have cost us more than the $50US upgrade.

The staff at the executive floor were very professional and helpful. They remembered our names and always addressed us courteously. We find that services were quite consistent overall. They do have a new shuttle service that runs every half-hour to the Saphan Taksin skytrain station and the journey takes about 10 minutes. The only down side is the service ends at 7p.m. It is a bit too far to walk from the BTS station (especially at night), so it's better to take the taxi directly to the hotel if you are staying out late.

Overall, the hotel is not a bad value considering the other two Starwood properties in Bangkok (The Westin and Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit) are considerably more expensive. Furthermore, it is only a catagory 2 hotel that requires only 3000-4000 starwood points per night (versus 7000 for the other two). I have to differ from some reviewers who complained that the hotel is run-down. It is true that the exterior of the hotel is a bit dirty and the interior a bit too 80's, it is, however, not exactly 'run-down'. I have seen a Sheraton 'Luxury' Collection property being much worse. I am not sure what the regular rooms are like but the newly refurbished executive rooms were execellent. They are not big but very comfortable with warm woodsy tones. Even though it may not be my first choice of hotel in Bangkok, I would not hesitate to stay there again.

We stayed here recently and for a Sheraton Hotel found it very ordinary and quite frankly tired. We arrived at 1am from sydney (4am our time!) and had to wait an hour for a roll away bed for our 5 year old child. This had been requested prior to our arrival. The front desk staff were quite unfriendly.

The hotel was being renovated during our stay and on our floor there was an incredibly toxic odour of glue thoroughout.

The breakfast and dinner though were very good as were the staff in the restaurants. The pools also very good and great for children, large grounds also.

Overall, I really liked this hotel. We stayed on the 17th floor and the room had great views over the city. The room was really well equipped with little practical extras like an iron and ironing board in the cupboard, mouthwash in the bathroom (something lacking in many 5* hotels) and we had nice filter coffee instead of the usual packet of instant powder. There was a good selection at breakfast and we ate at the riverside terrace where we could watch life on the river. It was surprisingly relaxing!

Our only complaint was the overpriced drinks in the lounge area - it was a really nice area (though the smoking section does not have the most comfortable seating), staff were beautifully attired and friendly but we paid more for coffee and soft drinks than we would in the UK/ROI. We also had a little problem when the battery failed in our door so we were unable to access our room - it took about 15 minutes before staff accepted there was a genuine problem and realised that an engineer was needed. To be fair to the staff, once Reception tried the card themselves and realised the problem, they were very apologetic and efficient. We were asked if we were in a hurry to go anywhere. Thankfully we were just back from a day exploring the city and just wanted in to have a coffee and rest so we were escorted down to the lounge and received complimentary drinks. 30 minutes later we were able to return to our room.

The location is good - taxis are constantly at hand and it's not too far to some of the main sights either.

  • Liked — Good location, practical room
  • Disliked — Overpriced drinks in hotel lounge area
