“Great hotel, love staying on the river in Bangkok”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2014

The Mandarin Oriental is an excellent hotel. The service is amazing and all of the staff were friendly and excellent. The view of the river was lovely, and it was great that to get to the signature restaurant and hotel spa you took the wooden hotel boat across the river.

The day beds by the pool were the perfect place to relax and enjoy some thai food with a pina colada! We were also invited to the managers drinks one night in the original part of the hotel which we really enjoyed.

We did a massage at the hotel spa, and although it was good, it was nothing special. For a similar price i am sure you can have a more special experience. That being said, it was lovely to go down to the massage in your hotel robe straight from you room!

An excellent hotel, that we keep returning. We stay in other good hotels when we are in Bangkok, but once a while we still return despite it is getting more and more expensive. Just wish they will give free wi-fi like other 5-star hotels in Bangkok do.

Room Tip: tell them they should provide free wifi

Chatting to the gym manager as he brought us a Jamu and an ice cold towel after our workout, he asked whether he had achieved his ambition of "killing us with service". Whilst we were still alive, this is as good as it gets.
The setting on the river is spectacular. The boats over to the spa, gym and Thai restaurant for us only added to the charm. The pick up a the airport was bliss after a long flight. The check in was as smooth and attentive as we've had anywhere. The smiles and the apparently genuine wish to make the stay of guests as good as it could be was universal. By the third morning we were getting our preferred breakfast beverages and food offered without asking. We had a massage; as good as we've had anywhere. We ate on the terrace of the Thai restaurant and the food and service was beyond reproach.
For us the style and elegance of the building and the entire hotel was entirely delightful. I didn't mind wearing trousers and shoes for dinner; it was their choice to run the hotel that for clients who obviously, in the main, were quite happy with that style too.
After a hot day travelling around Bangkok (rush hour on the Sky train was an experience; crowds of people who queue either side of the opening doors and file in politely after the packed train has emptied a little, Transport London please note) coming back to the Oriental was like being wrapped in cotton wool and the cares of the day were soothed away.
What a place! Definitely in our top 3 hotels ever. Perhaps the top one.

Tips for travellers:
1. Must see the Palace and the Reclining Budda. Spectacular.
2. Use the hotel boat to the Bridge and then catch the Sky Train.
3. Alternatively, taxis are cheap but always make sure they put the meter on.
4. Good bargains in MBK shopping mall (National Stadium on Skytrain). Pharaoh and Kk for handbags on the 2nd floor as per the Trip Adviser forum were good quality and reasonably priced with not to much hassle bargaining.
5. We didn't think much of the night markets but Asiatique had more interesting and slightly better quality and range of offering including good quality craft shops and stalls. We had a good night there and good food too.

I'm sure there are many good hotels in Bangkok but I would go anywhere else having experienced the Oriental. If anywhere is better than this then it would be amazing.

This hotel is nothing short of fabulous in all aspects. From the moment the Concierge takes your luggage on arrival until they wave you goodbye, everything flows like warm honey. If it was good enough for the likes of Somerset Maugham, its good enough for everyone. On the down side is the location in central Bangkok next to the Chao Phraya river. Wide stinky and crowded with poverty stricken people. Oh well, I wasn't one of them!

Great hotel with superb service and although it is more of a business hotel, we did feel welcome and not uncomfortable at all with our four kids. Location on the Chao Praya (with breakfast on the terrace beside the river) is great.

We've stayed at the Oriental several times, a favourite being in he Garden wing with a two-level suite. Later, taking a second home in Bangkok at the River Garden, we continued to enjoy the Oriental for dinners out, drinks, etc.

Service is always top notch and the character of the Authors' wing is unbeatable. Dining on the terrace overlooking the Chao Praya is a real treat.

I note that some reviews suggest the location is not great—I heartily disagree! Being on the river, only a short hop to the Saphan Taksin sky train statin, gives you the best of both worlds—while stepping into Bangkok history. What can be better than exploring vibrant energy of very local Bangrak and settling back into the calm oasis that is the Mandarin Oriental? (Try them in Macao, too.)

Room Tip: Garden suites have a view of the river and great layout, more interesting than the river wing rooms...

Was at the mandarin for a wedding in June and was excited to stay there as I heard lots of good things about the place. Butler service was very attentive and couldn't have asked for more. however, lots of flies in the hotel for some reason, mostly outdoor areas, very distracting and annoying, not expected from one of the best hotels of the world. As of
The spa, disappointing as well since it is well known spa, but as I first enter my impression was... Why does this place feel like such lack of maintenance?! The paint on the Doors and walls were peeling, and the steam wasn't working, and my massage was on the floor facing down with one towel to hold my face, could hardly breathe, I mean, we are at the mandarin Bangkok, are we not?!? What was going on for the crazy price that I was paying for? Some what disappointed and unpleasantly surprised by the hotel.
