“They run a tight ship here. Excellent service. Attention to detail.”
I could barely fault the Mandarin Oriental. It's located right on the river, and makes use of this geography to position its buffet looking out to the river view, and running boats across to the spa on the other side.
The pool area is lovely, and reserved for guests of the hotel only. It has green glass mosaic tiles, mature garden with giant birds of paradise and tropical plants screening and providing privacy, and offset against loungers with deep orange towels. Very elegant. Poolside service excellent.
I was not staying in the most expensive room in the hotel, and my only criticism was that there was some noise from the coridoor penetrating into the room, and I imagine vice-versa. This was largely due to the door not being air-tight, and there being no additional door to the bedroom. This would be by one and only criticism.
The room itself was elegantly furnished. Classic, but with style and a nod to European and Asian colonial influences. Good materiality. In the bathroom, marble and substantial glazed terracotta tiles. No corners cut. The room will rarely need upgrading because they've spent the money getting it right the first time.
In servicing the room, they put lovely Mandarin Oriental bookmarks in all my holiday reads, which are beautifully designed and aesthetic. A great touch.
The hotel staff are so well-trained. They anticipate a customer's every need. They are polite, friendly, receptive, helpful. It's a very tightly run ship.
The foyer area is kept abundant in flowers, subtle fragrant oil wafting through the atrium but not overpowering.
Their afternoon tea is wonderful, as is the historical wing of the hotel in general, and kept with a beautiful history.
Breakfast is also fabulous. A buffet with everything one could dream up. Cooked buffet, fresh orders for omelettes or anything else one desires, pastries, fresh fruit of every and all kinds, fresh juices of every and all kinds, etc.
The only negative is their charging, and they charge for everything, at rates that one would expect for a 5 star hotel, but everything is substantially higher in cost than one would find anywhere else in Bangkok. There are no bargains to be found.
Still - true 5 star luxury.
Deserving of 5 star review.
