I've been staying in Bangkok (from back packer to luxury) for over 25 years. Last stayed at the Dusit Thani in November 2009, and since then we have stayed at some other top notch hotels in Bangkok (see reviews). The Dusit group is Thai owned and this is evident in everything from its construction and décor to service. We stayed for eight nights.
Reasonably familiar with Bangkok this trip was all about location and luxury. We chose the Dusit for the superb location opposite Lumpini Park, great Skytrain and Metro transport links and easy walk to nightlife and night markets. For luxury we chose a suite with access to the Dusit Club and negotiated an upgrade to a Thai Heritage Suite (low season, long stay).
The Suite overlooked Lumpini Park and had balconies on two sides of this triangular building. Very comfortable, as you'd expect, butler service used only a couple of times to bring (complimentary) bottle of wine on ice to the room. Well planned room with excellent storage - though room safe did need some contortion to access at the back of a sizeable wardrobe.
The Dusit Club is a hotel within a hotel. Breakfast is served in the very comfortable club lounge on the third floor accessible only with a club access on your card key. Breakfast is the usual international affair, pan-Asian, European continental with hot food freshly prepared. Lots of healthy options for those heading the gym, pool or park later in the day. The Club room is also where you can get good freshly made tea and coffee any time, wine in the evening (5-7) and a chocolate buffet at 9pm if you actually made it to the gym, pool or park and need reward! There may be wine labels you don't recognise and the bubbly may not be French Champagne but we never had a bad glass and the service is generous. As the end of service (7pm) arrives staff ensure everyone who wants one has a full glass.
Dusit Club staff were exceptional and a particular mention must go to Nuch, Dusit Club and Guest Relation Manager, who manages the whole Dusit Club experience so well.
Do run in the park if you're inclined (see Lumpini Park review). If you use the gym be aware the (men's) changing rooms, steam and sauna are some way away from the gym up two floors in a lift and over a rooftop walk. You will need to get directions or be escorted the first time!
Hamilton's steak house is as good as ever. The in-house Italian restaurant needs work though, pizza was dry, lacked flavour and unappetising - the hotel has European chefs and imported ingredients so no excuse for this.
All in all an excellent stay and we will return.
It's obvious but Suite if you can.
