Despite of what you read about how great is this hotel's location ... it's not. The nearest sky train station (Chitlom BTS station) is at least a mile away. A walk that will take you through the busiest, dirtiest, and most polluted area of Bangkok. What's important, in my opinion, is the hotel's location and its proximity to Sky Train (BTS) stations and, thus, placing the entire city at your finger tips.
The Platinum market is across the street from the Watergate. Pantip Plaza is nearby. Regardless, there is plenty of shopping throughout Bangkok. My favorite is MBK (Mah Boon Krong) which is located just steps away from National Stadium BTS Station.
The Amari Watergate was sold to me on Priceline as a 5 star hotel! The property located in Pratunam has a lot of potential, but a five star hotel IT'S NOT! This is barely a 3-star hotel.
The Rip-off: my room was small and the furniture was outdated. Many drawers in the room were broken and did not open. As my reservations were for 10 nights, I requested a better room. The young Thai lady at the guest relations desk asked me to pay an extra US$ 60 a night on top of the $ 110 I paid through Priceline. I agreed to pay an extra $ 50 but after she spoke to the hotel manager (a European man), she demanded $ 130 a night extra. This was ridiculous!!! For the total of $ 240 per night I could have stayed at the Sukhothai, the Peninsula or even at the Oriental. Having a prepaid (no refund) type of reservation, I had to stay at this hotel for the entire duration.
One Saturday morning, I was awakened by heavy construction noise and drilling sound just above my room. After two hours of this, I complained and was moved to a different room. The new room was of the same size and outdated furniture.
The staff at this hotel have a very bad attitude not to mention that most of them barely speak any English. This was the first and last time I stay at this hotel. My advice to other travelers is to stay away from this hotel.
