“Excellent as usual”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

I have just spent 3 nights at the Amari and had a great stay. This was my third visit and the wonderful service and comfortable rooms make this now the only hotel I would use in Bangkok. Looking forward to returning next week

As part of our honeymoon we spent 3 nights in Bangkok in this hotel. We had a large and comfortable room right up on the 30th floor (3012) so had some stunning views south across the city. The views at night where incredible, the city really does come alive at night. The staff were very friendly and they were more than happy to help us and guide us in the right direction. The pool area was great and thankfully was sheltered from the wind by the building which meant you could use it right up until it closed at 10pm despite the wind and cloud picking up. The high humidity kept the pool and outdoor area comfortable even when the winds did increase.

The restaurants within the hotel were very good. We ate in 'Thai on 4' on our first night which is the hotel's main restaurant. This was a fantastic culinary experience (even if we did order a little too much!)and the staff were brilliant. I'd tried to learn a little Thai, for courtesy more than anything and when I said "kob khun ka" to the waitress at the end of the meal, she smiled and explained in perfect English that my wife should use 'ka' but as a man I should use 'kab'. We learnt quite a lot more phrases throughout the holiday and with her helpful advice we both had the confidence to speak a little Thai, knowing we were at least getting the basics right. Learn a few key phrases and you will go far! They do appreciate and get a real kick out of it when you surprise them with some of their mother tongue! The breakfast in the hotel was VAST! Options from all across the world from croissants to noodles, chicken sausages(!) to bread pudding (trust me, that one works!) My only critisisms with the breakfast were that there were so many options, it seemed they couldn't get any of the perfect. It's a small issue from a western point of view and I can see that to cater sufficiently for so many different cultures, you have to spread yourself thinly (pun intended). The other issue we had at breakfast was with a slightly pushy server. You will get asked to donate to a charity of orphans to provide them with food. They approach you as if it is a requirement but after I politely told him to go away once he ambushed us as we left and after telling him again I wasn't interested we were left feeling like we were being targeted as we were a captive audience.

We were in Bangkok for the night life and sightseeing element and although the Amari Watergate is in the middle of the shopping district, it still has an authentic vibe. All the small surrounding streets have food stalls and markets; you don't have to go far for authentic Thai food or living. To get further west to some of the sightseeing bits we wanted to do we walked for around 20 minutes to Siam Station and used the sky rail and then the water taxi's up the river. If you do walk from the Amari to the stations a block further south, once you have a feel for the place and feel like you no longer need to endure the humidity, use the large shopping precincts as an air conditioned short cut! Despite them all appearing to be different shopping centres, they all link up and once you are across the canal just south of the hotel you can promenade in cool, air conditioned bliss all the way to the raised walkway leading to the station. Do not underestimate the air conditioned shortcuts!

Room Tip: South facing room will have the best views

I tried out their Spa and had a 90 minute massage which is soft to medium. The therapist was very good for the message so I was happy for that, but the room was too cold and there was no introduction of names.
This was the first spa I was given very cold drinks to have before it started and when it did the room was so cold ice cream could have been kept there, I had to ask them to turn off the AC. It made the experience a little less enjoyable as a result of what could have been. Their music soundtrack is too rock and modern to create a relaxation atmosphere. If they can fix those areas I am sure it would be a great Spa.

The hotel is very large and big, but a bit dated with very slow elevators. During none peak time they seem to take for ages. They need to design one which stops on even or odd floors only as to speed up the waiting time.
Overall, a nice hotel with a good spa with room for improvement.

The hotel is in a great, central location close to many of the key shopping locations. The room was comfortable, spacious and clean. We were lucky as we had been upgraded so our room was on the 31st executive floor with an amazing view. The staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel is in a great, central location close to many of the key shopping locations. The room was comfortable, with great views and the staff friendly and helpful, recommending places to visit. The terrace bar was a great place to relax with a drink and a bite to eat while watching the hectic Bangkok traffic passing by and the roof top pool was an oasis of calm after the bustle of the city.

Great rooms and great service, staying here the second time around and the amenities at this establishment are all top notch. I wasn't however too happy with one of the male (maybe lady, couldnt say for sure) receptionists at check-in. An unwelcoming and hostile welcome was more than made up for by the rest of the courteous staff. Would recommend for a good family trip.
