“A Great Thai Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2007

We stayed at the Sofitel Bangkok Central Plaza for 3 nights last month -- at the beginning of our Thailand Holiday. We booked a Deluxe Room with Dynasty (Exec) privileges. WELL worth the extra money. With this room type, you get access to a Lounge on the 22nd floor. They offer various freebies throughout the day. Breakfast, brunch, lunchtime snacks, afternoon tea, evening cocktails (2 hours -- any cocktail from the bar menu. We had Margaritas, Jack Daniels, Vodka, etc). There's always something in the lounge. The sandwiches were delicious. Excellent choice of cakes and canapes. The location of the hotel isn't great -- but a taxi from the hotel to central Bangkok was under 100 baht. (Mainly around 70-80), The rooms were spacious -- and so were the bathrooms. Quite dated. I don't think they'd been decorated for a while. The staff were all VERY friendly. I guess it's the Thai way -- but we always felt very special. If you want a good, friendly 5 Star hotel -- stay here!!

  • Liked — The staff and the prices
  • Disliked — The dated rooms.

My fiancee and I stayed at the Sofitel Centrar Grand for four nights. The hotel was booked as part of a holiday package. The hotel is a fair distance out of the center of Bangkok but is located close to a train station, where it takes about 20mins to get into the centre of Bangkok.
There is a lovely big park over the road from the hotel. The hotel is linked to a large shopping center via an undercover carpark (not dodgy at all). The shopping center has a supermarket on the ground floor and there is a Tesco's supermarket within walking distance of the hotel.
We found the hotel staff lovely. They were very friendly and helpfull. The hotel was very clean with rooms being cleaned on a daily basis (as you would expect in a good hotel).
The hotel has two resturants: an international one (with buffet) and a Thai resturant. The Thai resturant is set within the hotel gardens. Really nice food at not too expensive prices. The buffet breakfast is great. A wide range of different foods
The pool is a good decent size with plenty of sun lounges surrounding the pool. A nice place to relax after a day of sight seeing.
I would stay at this hotel again.

Our experience is limited to an overnight stay. We stayed here for one night en route to Cambodia. Based on the price of our overnight stay, we did not have high expectations. However, we were surprised by the state of things: old, stained carpet, bathroom tub and sink, and bed sheets; tub with stains and hair; musty smell to the room. Perhaps other amenities may make up for the room's shortcomings which we weren't able to take assess due to our short stay. The reception staff were perfunctorily helpful.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2007

We stayed by the end of May for 4 nights: we booked a 9 day-trip to Thailand that included a stay in Bangkok and a more relaxing short vacation in Hua Hin along the coast.
Sofitel Central Plaza is located in Lat Phrao, a very commercial and famous area on the north-west of this huge town: just imagine that taxi drivers did not know this hotel, or better, they often got confused with the other Sofitel in Silom Rd., unless we were not saying "Please to Central Lat Phrao", getting as answer "Ahhh to the hotel then!"...
Anyway, Sofitel Central Plaza is quite impressive, a tall building from year 80's and everything reminds that time... The lobby is a bit old-fashioned but however pretty nice (if you like such "style" with cascades, flowers, golden finishing touches and so on). The Spa is small but ok and of course the service is excellent as typical in each Sofitel Centara Spa. There is also a swimming pool outside but as far as we could hear from other people, it doesn’t seem to be so frequented especially in the period we went.
Rooms reflect also the 80's look in all their features but if you're lucky enough to get one at a higher floor, the view out of the window is pretty nice especially during the night.
Clean service was perfect and careful: my fiend brought his own pillow from home and after the first night the cleaning staff realized that I could not be less than him and therefore they placed a special pillow treated with "sweet night and dreams fabric" from the Centara Spa...
Personnel was very gentle and everybody speaking good English, breakfast more than acceptable with a great variety of food, from Asian to standard "European". Also the restaurants were ok although very expensive compared to the average prices you might get outside.
A remarkable matter is represented by the fact that the hotel is quite far from the "City" and therefore you need to travel either by taxi or tuk-tuk (and then you must bargain the price...) or alternative can be the very modern and fast subway, the stop is closed to the hotel, it takes 20-25 minutes more or less to get to Lumphini or Silom Rd.
By the beginning we were told by the Travel Agent that Sofitel Central Plaza was near the airport... Actually not, or let's say it is relatively closed to the old Bangkok Airport, now used for domestic flights, but very far (30 minutes by car) from Suvarnabhumi, the new International Airport which is the one of the most of travelers.
So, considering the old-fashioned style and the location but being anyway a good hotel for all the rest of its features I'd say it can be a good choice for a short term stay or, in general, if it is booked within a "package" and you just get it.

It looked okay, when we arrived, but it toke 45 min. at the recepetioncounter before we could get our rooms

We were 7 persons, 2 of them were smokers, so they had to stay on a different floor. So our party were diveded in 3 rooms on the 10th and 11th floor.
The staff had poor communications skills through out our stay for 4 days. They called everyday to hear if we had another voucher to confire our stay and everytime I had run down to show them the remaning vocuher, and they found out they already had what they needed

They worst experince was the minibar. The drank a Fanta that had experired december 2005, and found several others cans that were to old. One can experired june 2004. Nice :-)
I had to complaine 3 times before they changed the minibar and the 2 rooms that we were staying had also cans ans beers that were 1-2 years to old
In all the time the staff said that a mnager would contact me about the problems, but he/she never did contacted me or the rest of my family.
When we finally checked out 4 days later, the staff agin requested the missing voucher that thay already had confirmed 3 times that they had. And wanted me to pay a feefor late check out. The "missing" voucher confirmed that we the rooms one more day, and had paid for these. But it still took them 15 min. to find the voucher

So please: If you want a great stay in Bangkok, don't stay in the Sofitel Central Plaza Bangkok

Sofitel is an old hotel, but the staff there are really helpful and nice. There is a shopping mall located next to it and the BTS and MRT stations are close by (about 15 minutes walk).

The room is old and still requires a physical key to get past the wooden door. It is however, well maintained. There is not much of a view from the hotel, but it is really close to the weekend market at Chatuchak. In fact, the hotel provides a shuttle service that will take you to chatuchak market (check with the concierge for the schedule).

The international breakfast is delicious and prepares you well for the day ahead.

The only downside of the hotel is the location. It is a distance from the city. Getting to and fro may pose to be a problem during peak period. It is however close to the airport (about 20-30mins on a cab).

At about S$140 a night, it is value for money.
