My GF and I (Both in our early 30's) were traveling around South East Asia in December 2012. Bangkok was the first and second to last part of our journey.
Since we were back/flash-packing it, we really couldn't shop in Bangkok when we arrived at the beginning of our trip. We knew Bangkok had some good shopping venues and we knew that we wanted to stop in Bangkok to do some last minute shopping before heading out to Japan (i.e. to buy some winter gear - as we knew Japan would be cold and required warmer gear)
We searched for places close to Siam (Siam Paragon, MBK) as those are the two main places we wanted to shop at before heading out. In looking at the hotels in and around the area, we found the Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam. Knowing that this was the second last part of our trip and knowing when we were going to arrive and depart - We booked the hotel well in advance (Booked in September for end of December). It cost us $45-50 USD and included breakfast and wifi. Yes, it was more expensive than the other lesser known hotels, however, the location was a key item in our decision making.
Perfectly located across National Stadium BTS and about 5 min walk to MBK Centre and 7 minutes to Siam Paragon.
From National Stadium you can take the BTS to Siam Exchange BTS stop (1 stop east of National Stadium) for about 25 Bhat (if I remember correctly) and then get on other lines to take you to other areas of Bangkok.
However, once you arrive at the Holiday Inn - you will be pleasantly surprised as to how close it is to many of the sights and sounds of Bangkok's shopping
One thing about the hotel is that floors do smell like cigarettes from time to time - the room didn't, however, the hallway/elevator area certainly did.
Service was good - No issues here and nothing out of the ordinary
The room was very comfortable, clean and modern. On par if not better than Holiday Inn Expresses in most North American cities. They had options for pillows provided. A nice flat screen TV with numerous channels. Very modern design/decor. Overall very nice. Our room was facing the south side - National Stadium. I suggest you get the same as it allows you to see some of Bangkok from you room - Get a higher floor room if possible.
Outside of Room: Hallway/Elevator Area - did smell like smoke from time to time.
Bathroom/Shower: Modern, Clean - All what you would expect in a North American Holiday Inn
POOL: Didn't check and didn't know if they had
BREAKFAST: Included and was good. However, it was VERY busy in the morning - Very hard to find a place to sit, however the view is pretty nice as it is on a mid level floor which overlooks the south side of the city. Options for breakfast were plenty - No made to order omelets, however, they had numerous choices for breakfast - Pretty good for what you pay.
Overall you are paying for the location. IF you want a hotel close to shopping then book this hotel.
Get a higher floor if possible and ask for it to face the south side of the hotel (i.e. BTS/National...

Appreciate you taking time to write a review for our Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam and glad you enjoyed our good price with fair price point with your girlfriend. Our location makes it very convenient to explore what Bangkok city center has to offer.
As you correctly highlight we are a select service hotel and we offer only the things you need and nothing else. We do not offer room-service, we do not have a stocked minibar nor do we have a restaurant, swimm-up bar or concierge service. We do have trolleys for the convenience of our guests to bring the luggage to their room. We have a mini fridge in every room, vending and ice machine in the lobby and level 7. On request there are additional toiletry items available from the Front Desk. Our “forgot something” card is highlighting this in every guest room. You do not pay for all the items which you do not use in your stay and this is why we can offer such a great price point in our location.
Our Express Breakfast Bar is as well included in the room price same as the free WiFi. Our selection includes four hot dishes such as daily changing rice soup, fried rice dish, an egg dish and a sausage. On the cold selection we have the three cereals’, 3 cut fruits, 2 whole fruits, 2 different yoghurts, bakery selection with danish’s, muffins and croissants and white & whole meal toast. 3 juices and coffee, tea, chocolate and Mocca as hot drinks.
Please feel free to keep me as a point of contact when you are planning your next get-away with your group of friends to our hotel as I would be more than happy to help you with your arrangements.
