We were looking for affordable accommodation in the center so that we could watch some rugby (late game from South Africa) and ice hockey (early game from New Jersey) at one of the many local sports bars, while maximising our sleep in between!
After enquiring at many local hotels & guest houses (minimum price for 2 people 1000 baht), a local pointed me towards the Star Inn, conveniently located next to Nana BTS station. They had one "budget room" (#301) for 799 baht - only available because it was awaiting some repairs for "water going on to floor" ;-) Luckily the repairs had either been done, or deemed unnecessary - there was a damaged area of floor tile near the bed, and one side of the sliding shower door was missing, so we assumed that the issue was one of these - neither caused any problems for us during our stay.
The receptionist seemed quite concerned that we might like a larger, more comfortable room but we explained that we were happy with the cheapest room. So we checked in, and went off to enjoy the rugby in the new sports bar "The Game" just down the road.
When we returned at 1am we were pleased to see that our hotel didn't have any "hostesses" outside to entice customers into the restaurant, unlike the World Inn across the road. In fact, the hotel restaurant was peaceful enough at this hour for us to enjoy a Skype chat with family in the UK (wi-fi only available in the restaurant/lobby).
We had a great night's sleep and managed a bleary-eyed stumble a short distance down the road to an early-opening pub to watch the hockey. We even had time to come back for a short nap before checking out at noon!
Frankly, we felt that the price for an air-conditioned room in this area was very good, and the staff were lovely & helpful even at odd times of day. True, there was no window in our room (but the receptionist did bring this to our attention) and the decor was a little bit "tired" - but everything was clean and we found the mirror over the bed hilarious! Plus it is so convenient for the BTS which was great for our trip to the train station the next day.
Note that there is a nightclub next door so the rooms on that side might be noisy. We could hear the music in our room but not so loudly that it disturbed our sleep, and in fact the lack of window was probably a bonus in that case.
For lower prices, stay near Khao San Road. If you can afford 1000 baht+ for a double, there are plenty of options nearby so shop around. But for a budget room at the heart of the city, we will stay at the Star Inn again!
Of the budget rooms, 301 is in the center at the back so well-insulated from outside noise.
