I expected so much from this hotel because it ranks so highly on Trip Advisor. I am qualified to comment on the hotels in this area because I stay in them all.... all the time as my company office is nearby so I frequent the area.
Others nearby that I use, like Dream and Aloft (see my other reviews) don't rank anywhere nearly as high as this one...and I can't understand why. Park Plaza was just ok for me; and that's being nice considering things went far from smoothly during my stay.
I can't stand it when hotels push two single beds together and call it a King. It is ok if the beds actually connect and hold together somehow, and have a King sheet set. But constantly separating single beds or overlapping single sheets...err no.
I always make sure I book a non-smoking King room too.... these two things are so important to me. At check-in I usually ask, and they said 'actually Sir you have two single beds in your room'. I did not accept this so they changed me to a smoking room that stank. I went back down and gave them a chance to fix it. I ended up with two single beds pushed together (I was falling down the middle all night.....check out the photo). Expressing my disappointment they said that I could move in the morning (to the room I had paid for in the first place, how nice). But I don't want to be disturbed in the morning, being woken up after a long flight, packing up my luggage and moving again. I explained this and they promised there would be no hurry to move.
The phone rang about 10:30 in the morning and they wanted to move me, finally to the room I had first paid for. I said I would let them know when I am ready, as I did not want to be bothered just yet. The phone rang again in 45 minutes. I had to get up and move. Clearly they wanted the room I was in.
I so politely explained my feelings to the reception, and then to the manager. I said 'I did not get what I paid for one the first night so I would like to be to be upgraded on the second night'. They just said sorry we are 100% full. It is obvious they are enjoying running a high occupancy because of the reviews, but allowing no contingency for customers like me.
Throughout the whole stay the service was just acceptable.... nothing special, I carried my own luggage twice during that muck up at check in (despite being a very good tipper) because concierge missed me having to move twice. Oh yes...the check in 'welcome drink' ...they forgot that too. I see others checking in getting a drink, but nothing for me, thanks again. The restaurant service was just average also. Everything was fairly average.
So how does this hotel rank so high on Tripadvisor? I can't explain it. Check out my Aloft review...I love that place! ...Aloft should be at the top, not Park Plaza.
I travel as a part of my job.... one thing I never find is a hotel that are willing to offer any compensation to a guest they have let down. Why not offer a certificate or voucher, so if the guest comes back they are promised a room upgrade, or a meal, just a couple of drinks or anything! This could serve as a way to attract that guest to return, offering the hotel another chance at impressing them. Hospitality managers only seem to care about the bottom line revenue for the current month, week or day alone.... and as a business owner I cant understand that.
Will I go back? No.. I will go straight to Aloft, for the same price, top service and the best beds in Bangkok. Would a room upgrade certificate for my next trip have allured me back? ...yeah I guess I would have given them another chance. Was I offered one? No... Not during that stay and nothing for the next. Just 'sorry sir we are full' (you can go suck eggs now).

Check if you pay for a King you are not being given a SINGLE BED!
