“The best night out in Bangkok!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Tawandaeng is a huge restaurant come cabaret come beer hall that has been delighting customers for over ten years.
Whilst not cheap the quality of the food, beer and entertainment makes it excellent value and my friends and I make it a monthly treat, and a must-go venue when entertaining visitors to Bangkok.
The huge menu (no beef) has a few German inspired dishes (deep fried pork knuckle with sauerkraut and mash and a wurst platter with the same sides) but is mainly contemporary modern Thai cooking. There are some dishes which truly excell, try the raw prawns with seafood sauce-undoubtedly the best I've had anywhere-or the 'Tawandaeng style' morning glory. In fact, for a restaurant that serves so many people with such startling efficiency, the food is outstanding, and, despite not being cheap, great value.
The beer, brewed on the premises by a German braumeister who has been with the company since its inception, comes in three varieties, lager, wheat and dark and as a wheat beer lover I cannot speak highly enough of it. At 130 baht per half litre (although we tend to buy it in 5 ltr towers!) it is exceptional value and there is no tragic downside the next day.
The cabaret, musically directed by Bruce Gaston, is fully professional and the singers are of world-class standard. The band itself is one of the highest paid musician jobs in Bangkok and this is reflected in the calibre of the players.
The serving staff are attentive, helpful, polite and friendly and deserving of a reasonable tip
Tawandaeng attracts a mixed crowd of wealthy Thais (check out the car park!), office parties and ex-pats and is pretty
much a guaranteed fun evening out. They do the whole birthday thing well with singing waiters and sparky things and encourage foreigners to get involved in the audience participation sections of the evenings entertainment.
All in all a great value, if not cheap, night out.
A feast of food and rather a lot of beer tends to come to around 1000-1500 a head in my experience.
Now, stop reading this and go to Tawandaeng, you'll love it there.

“always good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

A great place to go for a group dinner and for listening to Thai music and song. Good food; of course the pork knuckle is famous. But so many other good thai food as well and beer as well. A bit out of the way to get to and difficult to get a table near the stage where the music is playing. But all in all, always a good, enjoyable, and fun experience.

“Good night out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

The ambience here is all about the locals having fun. The entertainment is good, constantly changing from solos to caberet type numbers to what seemed to be more traditional music (involving drumming/percussion).
The food is not German beer hall style - but Thai and Thai fusion.
The seating is small tables and plastic chairs - not large wooden tables and benches like those found in traditional style beer halls.
The beer seemed to be German-style or German influenced, but that is the most polite I can be about it.
I didn't like it at all.
The service was interesting here - they seemed to want us to order as we were taking our seat. During the night you would have to say the waiters were attentive.
Summary - go here for a good night out.

“Fun place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013 via mobile

Great place to chill out, meet friends or talk with colleagues. They have three fine beers, the dark one is my favorite and the food is typical Thai bar style. The staff is really nice and the life entertainment is fun to watch. You can reach this place via bus and monorail to create a true adventure experience without exposing yourself to too much risk.

“Red Sun Brew House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

Good beer brewed to a German recipe, German style food, a bit of a trip in a taxi, but an interesting place.
10 years ago (1990's) micro breweries were all the rage here, this one still survives, almost the last of the breed.
