“Didn't live up to expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

I wanted somewhere special serving Italian food for my sixth anniversary with my partner. I decided on this place having seen comments by Chef Ian Kittichai (a promiment Thai chef) praising the food here. I had high expectations, though sadly they weren't met.

The amuse bouche was a small glass of carrot soup with tiny cubes of (I think) squid in it. It was underwhelming, and served with the tiniest of spoons making eating it a chore. The breads looked pretty but ultimately were also underwhelming.

To start I had foie gras. The foie gras was beautifully cooked, but was drenched with an onion-y gravy which was not mentioned in the menu description and in my opinion went poorly with the foie gras. The major problem was with the accompanying salad, though. The salad dressing contained salt which had not dissolved giving rise to several unpleasant crunchy/salty mouthfuls. My partner's octopus was also rather salty.

The too-much-salt theme continue with a black truffle cheese risotto, though the rice was perfectly cooked. The dish was marred, though, by thin slices of cured pork on top which was virtually impossible to cut through with a spoon.

My partner had osso bucco. It was a massive portion - way too much for one. It was OK - nothing special. The vegetable sides, however, were disappointing. The spinach was under-seasoned, and the mashed potato gluey.

The only dish which wasn't flawed in my opinion was the dessert - a zabaglioni semi-freddo - sweet, rich and utterly delicious.

Service was good, apart from a bit of a delay getting the bill and a further delay getting the boxed, left over veal, but by that time the restaurant had become quite busy.

This was my first, and probably last, visit to this restaurant. In future I think I'll be sticking to my old favorite: L'Opera.

“Fantastic italian food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013 via mobile

We went there with friends abroad and found a very beautiful location to consume very well prepared dishes, made by italian cook. We recognized very fresh products, as if they imported them directly from Italy, but actually they could do this way, we didn't ask. Price is fair compared to the very high quality of the food. Wine choice is very high.

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

I travelled a lot along Asia, to China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia. As an italian, it's very difficult for us to find an italian restaurant where you can say "it's like being home". La Bottega is one, maybe the only one, where you can actually feel at home.
Luca is a very skilled chef, and welcomes you very warmly in his restaurant; the atmosphere is very nice, in one of the best districts of Bangkok.
The raw materials for the food are imported fresh from Italy weekly and you can find very particular products, such as white asparagus, fassona beef and so on.
The dishes are presented with artistic compositions, and you can chose for meat or fish equally, due to the high level of the cuisine.
The fresh tuna tartare and the pici senesi with duck breast and liver sauce, Arezzo style, are two fantastic dishes and you can match them with one of the many wines of the restaurant's cellar, furnished with the best labels of red, white and sparkling italian wines. The choice you have is limitless and the prices are fair.
