“Excellent hotel and great value.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

The Chatrium is something of a hidden gem when compared to other Bangkok hotels. It's riverside location is a little further out than some of the better known hotels but it's only a few minutes on the complimentary river taxi to the central pier and the Sky Train station. We had river view suites, quite high up which gave commanding views. On the night we booked in they were struggling to find a vacant room of the same standard we had booked so gave us a two bedroomed suite for the same price. It was the size of an apartment! The rooms were modern and immaculate. We chose to dine on the outside terrace by the river. The breakfast buffet was excellent and on one evening we ordered the dinner buffet which offered excellent choice and a very high standard. The staff were very efficient and attentive and the price was a lot less than other similar standard hotels. I wouldn't hesitate in choosing this hotel again for any future visits to Bangkok.

Room Tip: Book a river view suite with inclusive breakfast. You won't be disappointed and it's still a...

This is the first time we've ever stayed in a 5 star hotel, so our rating may be biased as it seemed head and shoulders above any hotel we've ever stayed in. We are budget travelers and decided to "splurge" for less than $100 per night as we felt this may be our only chance to ever stay in a 5 star hotel. We had a river view room which was incredible as we had a birds-eye view of all the river traffic and a great view of the city. We also had the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. There was a kitchenette in the room. The bathroom had a large separate tub and a huge walk in shower. There is an adult pool, kids pool, and hot tub. But the hot tub was not very hot. There is also a restaurant on site. I'm not going to go into all of the hotel amenities, rather I'll just try to provide information for the area.

There is a free shuttle boat on the river that will take you to Sathorn Pier where the BTS (train station) is located. For the most part it runs every 15 minutes from early morning until midnight.

From that pier you can take the free shuttle to Asiatique shopping center (open after 5 PM) which has many shops, restaurants, and a city viewing ferris wheel. The market and restaurants were overpriced for Bangkok, but there are many restaurants with live music right along the river which is nice.

From the pier you can also take the water taxis (express boats) to various points in the city along the river. For about $1 you can take the water taxi up to the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha. They are a short walk after you get off the boat.

You can also purchase canal tours at the pier. My wife, son and I were offered a two hour canal tour for about $30. We were unsure about going when another couple who wanted to go asked about joining us. The tour operator offered it to us for $20 if we rode with them. Then another group of 3 joined in and we ended up paying $5 per person on the boat (the boat is capable of seating 20+ people so it felt like we had it to ourselves). The tour was just sightseeing. No narration provided. But we enjoyed seeing the part of Bangkok you can only see from the canals.

There is also the BTS train station at the pier. It is cheap and it will drop you off at or near most every other tourist site you could want to see. It was very easy to navigate despite the language barrier. Once on the train they make announcements in Thai and in English. It was much easier than commuting by taxi or tuk-tuk.

If you are here on the weekend, I suggest taking the train up to the Chatuchak Market. We spent the whole day getting lost among the maze of shops. You can read about this if you check out activities in Bangkok on Tripadvisor. This was a surprising highlight of our time in Bangkok. But be warned, it is EXTREMELY busy. Wall to wall people.

The last thing I'd like to add is there is a restaurant within walking distance from the pier called Prachak that was excellent. According to Fodor's Travel the rich send their maids to get food here and bring it home. It looks like a hole in the wall and we discovered it by chance when we walked by and saw how busy it was with all locals eating there. It was the best food we ate on our entire trip and was also the cheapest meal we ate on the trip. Good combination. If you want to go, once you get off at the pier just walk to the main street and turn left (North). Walk for less than 5 minutes and it's basically across the street from the Robinson shopping center. My wife and I highly recommend it!

We found this to be a great hotel as far as location where we could easily access the city by water and train with very little cost. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: It should go without saying, but the higher the floor, the better the view.

Working at a hotel myself I understand things can go wrong and they do, However with this hotel there seemed to be a comedy of errors. Firstly they didn't pick us up from the airport. Then when we arrived our room was not ready until 2pm which was fine. After going to 3 different rooms we finally found a room that was clean. Free beer was offered however not in the room, when it arrived it was hot.Mini bar was not stocked. We were upgraded to exc lounge which was fantastic, when we went back to our room our key didn't work. My fax was lost 3 times all in one day!!!... Pfff anyway the next day a very nice man Art was working that turned it all around. He organised a very nice dinner at the hilton hotel and managed to get a very good discount for us.The rooms were very beautiful with a balcony with a great view of the river. Thanks to Art we left the hotel happy even though it started off very rough

My wife and I stayed at the Chatrium Riverside for 4 days over Chinese New Year. Place was fine as a 4/5 star facility, well located, easy to access via boat to BTS and other transport options. However, over CNY, the hotel was full, and this made for a number of issues.

1. Check in took longer than it should have. We were asked to wait in a bar/lounge area, and took about 10-15 minutes for someone to come and complete the check in. This in spite of perhaps one other check-in in progress when we arrived. Staff were very friendly when they got to us, and took us up to the room to show the amenities, but there was something lacking in the customer service while waiting.

2. Breakfast in the morning was a bit of a free-for-all. Quite crowded, long lines waiting for tables - especially one day when it rained in the morning, taking away many outdoor tables overlooking the river. The staff were doing a good job of making tables available, but again, the attention to the customer service - making the guest feel like the situation was under control - was lacking

3. One evening, the boat service was seriously delayed. We were waiting at the dock for over 45 minutes for the boat, scheduled for every 15 minutes. When we called the hotel, we were assured that a boat was coming, that there were no issues with the craft, and we should just wait for '5 minutes more' and a boat would be there to pick us up. After the 2nd phone call, all the people waiting for the boat (about a dozen) decided we would get taxis back to the hotel instead. While the hotel did the right thing and picked up our taxi tab, we felt that the desire to please the customer in words impacted the ability to really tell the customer what was going on. The next day, crew of the boat mentioned that the boat was being serviced (weeds in the propeller) and did not go out for many hours. Again, this felt like true customer service was missing. Would have been better to tell the guest the facts or suggest a taxi versus always trying to make them feel like the situation was under control, when it clearly wasn't.

Overall, the experience at the hotel was fine. We loved the location, the pool was great (bit too much kid noise, and not enough lounge chairs), but we would likely stay there again, as we felt we got good value for money.

Room Tip: river view, high floor

We stayed at the Chatrium for 3 nights. We loved it! We were upgraded from a reverview room to a riverview suite...what a great start! The suite ws so good we didn't want to leave it. We could have spent our whole time in Bangkok in the hotel...lol

The staff were exceptional, the food was really good and we loved the location. A bit of tranquility in the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. The free shuttle boat to Sathorn Pier worked well for us. It runs every 15 minutes and makes connecting with the MRT and SBT and the river boats a breeze.

We enjoyed the breakfast each day. There was quite a range to choose form...way too much to get bored in 3 days! We also had the buffet dinner one night as we were too tired to be bothered going out of the hotel. For a buffet style meal it was sensational. Again, way too much to choose from. I wish I could eat more :)

We will definately stay here again when next in Bangkok
