“not too bad!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

as others have pointed out it's not exactly a very clean and hip hostel.
but on nights when you couldn't find an empty bed anywhere this hostel is truly a saviour (yes it happened to me. precisely due to the bad reputation this hostel has plenty of empty beds even on the day itself)

the shower's cleanliness was a bit appalling, but it's not unbearable for a night or two.
it's probably one of the cheapest place to stay in Bangkok anyway.
Wifi and aircon works well, too.
the location is great; just a few minutes' walk from the BTS station.

won't say it's a great hostel but it's livable!

It's 3am here and our first night staying here (unfortunately we have another night booked as well) and I can't sleep. The rooms have giant indoor opaque windows so the hallway and adjoining room light shine in brighter than the actual room lights. The. The ac is on and it's freezing - the paper thin sheet does little to help. I'm not sure if I'm just imaging bugs or feeling actual bugs. I'm a super heavy sleeper but kept waking up due to being cold, the light, bites?, or just the hard pillow and uncomfortable bed. Been traveling in SE Asia for over a month and this is our most expensive stay and the worst by far!!!! Do not stay here! The guy at the front is nice but there are many nice people in Thailand - I paid for a decent place to sleep but that's not what you get here. The bfast says that it's coffee and toast...not really worth much. The reason we booked here is because we're getting myanmar visas tomorrow and we wanted to be close to the embassy - which it is, but try to find something else!

This hostel was average for it's facilities, not bad at all. It's very near to the centre of things, near to the BTS station for the sky train and easy to find.

Me and my friend were on a 2 month trip of Asia and this was one of the first places we stayed at, but it ended up being a place we came back to a bit through the trip whenever we were using bangkok as a base for the next place.

One time we had to get a train at night but only got in at the moment so there was no point in us booking a hostel, we went back to Downtown YHA and left our bags there, the guy had absolutely no problem and when we came back to get our bags later in the day to head to the station, he let us have a shower and freshen up free of charge before we left. He offered, we didnt need to ask!

Very friendly guy and it really made the place worthwhile

The YHA in Bangkok was probably the worst accommodation that we have stayed in on our travels of South East Asia. However the staff are most friendly and helpful.
I would probably recommend paying a little bit more money and staying in a nicer place. The rooms were very small, and this place did not have an en-suite bathroom.
Also, there is no lift to the floors, nor is there a hand rail up the stairs.

I wouldn't personally stay here again given that other accommodation is pretty cheap. But if you're on a budget and need somewhere to crash for a night or two, this is definitely the place. Location is awesome.

Room Tip: Make sure the windows close all the way. When it rained one night, the water came pouring in to the...

I booked this YHA hostel expecting the same standard of the more modern YHA hostel on the Sukhumvit Road. It was disappointing: narrow stairs which really should have guardrails in places, cramped washing / shower area and arctic air-con made for a somewhat challenging stay.TWe had to chase up clean towels from reception as there were none in the room which had one window that wouldn't close properly. Otto, the guy on the front desk, is, however, one of the friendliest and most helpful people you are likely to meet on your travels. In my view, this place needs total renovation but is adequate if your standards aren't too high and you're only using your room as a crash-pad.

Room Tip: At least find one with a window

I cannot recommend staying at this hostel. There were some little animals in my bed that bit me all night and I was allergic to them. Also, the rooms are really small and air condition doesn't work. Showers are only cold. Staff was not really friendly. And if you're unlucky, you have to haul all your luggage upstairs to the fifth floor without an elevator. Next time, I'll rather spend some more money and stay at a decent place.

We booked before we arrived in Thailand as we had been using YHA in New Zealand. It appears NZ is far superior. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was adequate but the shower and toilet were awful. Cockroaches all over the place. We were supposed to stay 2 nights but found a lovely hotel for our second. Decided from this point on we wouldn't do budget accommodation in Thailand and haven't looked back!!
