I previously reviewed this hotel last summer (2012) and have stayed there three times since then. I still think this is a great hotel, but a few details have changed in the past year. Prices are rising along this street. At least three hotels have raised prices that I know of over the past year (Reno, Muangpol, and Pathumwan). As of July 15, the cheapest room at Pathumwan will be 1400 baht. A buffet breakfast is now included. The rooms I have stayed in over the past year have all required me to place the key in a slot to run the A/C and lights. That was not the case in the room I had a year ago. The desk clerk told me that utility prices have been rising, which probably explains both this change and the rising room rates. The hotel also requires a deposit on the room in addition to the room fee. I read somewhere that the deposit is 1000 baht, but I was only asked to pay 500. It might depend on the type of room.
I find the staff here to be very friendly and helpful. They allowed me to store my luggage for up to a month for just 100 baht per piece. On another trip, my wife and I needed to send some luggage ahead to Chiang Mai and one of the desk agents suggested a nearby post office, then wrote down our request in Thai. The parking attendant flagged a taxi for us and told the driver where to take us. Most of the other hotels in this price range do not flag taxis for their guests. The hotel is still very clean and the rooms are quite large. Wi-Fi is free, unlimited, and does not require a passcode.
Another reviewer mentioned that Pathumwan House is difficult to find. I have found that most airport taxi drivers do not know the hotels on this street by name. You should tell your driver that the hotel is off of Rama 1 road on Soi Kasem San 1. Many drivers will know where you mean. The Soi only allows one way traffic. When you enter the Soi, go straight until you reach a T-intersection, then turn right. You should see a big sign for the hotel with an arrow indicating how to reach it.
I gave the hotel five stars on my last review because it was a very nice hotel and an incredible value for the money. I give it four stars this time. It is still a very nice hotel, but with the rising prices I would now call it just a good value.
