“Bad guesthouse. Very bad owner :(”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2009

Old rooms. Old furniture. In a toilet water proceeds. A very poor and bad breakfast.

The main thing! The dishonest relation of the owner of it guesthouse (her name - Som) to clients. We have check in early in the morning only for one day.

With the owner (Som) we have agreed that we will pay for only one day. An important point: we did not bargain, and have paid the price for day which the Som has told. But! Same morning the owner Som has suddenly changed our arrangements and has declared that we should pay not one day, but for 2 days. And how our arrangement???

Threats, false calls to police, scandals have begun. Thus we lived only one in guesthouse! I so have understood the Som wished to earn simply still some hundreds bat.

Disgustingly! At the same time there were any strange european friends of the Som who supported scandal the owmer. So we do not recommend this place. The bad relation with tourists.

It is located in Soi 22 of Bangkok, in the quite but exciting section of the town. just a short cab, walk, or motor, to market, shop’s, bars, tours, banks, ATM’s, parks, museums, or shopping centers. Quite a way from the International Airport but in Bangkok what isn’t? The cab ride for me was 250/300 baht with tolls and tip. Som’s Guesthouse is welcoming and attentive but not for the faint of heart since there are quite a few stairs. I think you will find that in all of Thailand or the Far East stairs are a part of life. It is a home away from home and don’t be surprised to be sharing breakfast with other travelers from France Germany Australia Belgium Austria England US and Malaysia. Large rooms with air-conditioning and very attractive rates for budget travelers. Each room has fridge, Cable TV, hot water and shower. Services including internet cafe, postal service, and onsite or very close by are currency exchanges, flight ticket reservations and reconfirmation, visa extensions or applications for visas for Cambodia and Vietnam. Same day laundry if collected very early. A daytime room service is available to cater to you and will help with any travel expectations, even a safe area free of charge for Guest's luggage while I was on trip. I choose Som’s because it was a great deal for a world traveler on a budget. They have continental breakfast of bread, egg, butter, jam, fresh fruit, fruit juice, tea and coffee. Very clean and comfortable rooms, cable TV, good and friendly services. The room rate includes breakfast. It stands in the shadow of several huge hotels including Queens Park Hotel.

  • Liked — Most of the staff, but like every where there are those that just dont seem to be helpful.
  • Disliked — Stairs

We stayed here on recommendation from a friend. The guesthouse is located in a great location.

The amenties are really basic, but they are clean. The room was remade everyday, and we got complimentary bottles of water. There was air conditioning in the room as well as a fridge.

On the main street there are plenty of massage parlours and places to eat. The service at the guesthouse was great. The people were very friendly and helpful. There were plenty of taxi and tuk tuk drivers on the main road if you want to explore Bangkok.

If you are not going to spend a lot of time in your room then I would recommend this place. I would only stay here again if I was travelling on a budget.

  • Liked — Location, friendly and helpful service.
  • Disliked — Bathroom amenities were very basic.

Staying in Bangkok on a purpose other than business or holiday leaves one seeking less expensive options.
After all, less spent on rent is more for food, travel, and the many and varied other pleasures which BKK has to offer.
I had found myself in Soi 22 near the Asok / Phrom Phong BTS skytrain, and went for a wander down some of the small alleys off the soi.
I walked into Soms Guesthouse, and found the owner Som greeting me with a smile and happy to show me a room.
The rooms they have range from 500 baht to 900 baht per night.
This is because the building is small, friendly and compact. Some rooms are larger, airier and brighter, with 2 others 'harder to fall in love with'
These are lovingly referred to as "the backpacker rooms"
Anyhow, to cut a long story short, I ended up in the backpacker room at 500 baht, with apologies all around and promises to move me when a better room was vacant.
At this point, let me give you the ups and downs on the backpacker rooms. They have no window, so you have a Lord-of-the-rings sort of ambience and time stands still. Especially in the morning, when it could just as well be midnight.
Having said that, Bangkok is not somewhere that you really want to hang out in the room 24/7.
On the positives, the bed was comfortable, the room had a FAN as well as a/c, and the whole building has free, fast broadband wi-fi running around 50-90kBps.
The TV was new and has free satellite channels including movies.
Oh - and there is a large fridge and breakfast is included in the room rate. Even at 500!
Downstairs reception is very social. There are a lot of Aussie expat businessmen and managers staying at Soms, and it is a friendly atmosphere where after a day or two you know everybody's name and you have a couple of mates in BKK to chat with. A very 'family' atmosphere.
Som is the owner, a friendly bubbly Thai lady who runs this guesthouse and two bars with the help of her English husband Jeremy.
You can get laundry sent out by the bag, and it is a perfect location in the soi for massage, food vendors, 7/11 stores and the Queens Park which is next door.
The street vendors have some awesome food here, and you are free to use plates, cutlery etc if you bring food back to eat.

Free coffee and tea downstairs wherver you want, and the bookcase has books for you to read at your own pace, and 3 computers are available if you don't have your own.

Beers are available at 65 baht each, regardless of brand, as are spirits at 90 baht.

Som and Jeremy are very hospitable and run a great guesthouse.
It is a safe, friendly secure environment with an excellent bunch of 'inmates' that makes you feel more at home than on holiday.
The 700/800/900 baht rooms are spacious, bright and comfortable, and more often than not the place is full.
It is not easy to get a room - which is testament to Som and Jeremy and their lovely nature. Lots of return guests and referrals which really says it all.
After 5 some of the guests return, and the bar becomes a cheerful bustling place where everyone banters over a beer or two.

I have stayed from 5 star to "OMG No, you cant be serious!" style properties and what struck me about this one is the genuine nature of the owners, the camaraderie of the guests, and the effort that goes into making visitors comfortable and 'at home'.
I had a few valuables, so I was after a budget property that was safe, and convenient to all amenities and the BTS sky train.
This definitely suited the criteria and I now have some new friends as well as a healthy wallet, and all of my belongings still intact.

I have now moved to a 'loft' room at 400 baht a night which is also owned by Som. She has 2 bars along soi 22 as well as the guesthouse, and one of them has a couple of rooms to let at a very reasonable 400 baht. Both have AC and TV and "the Hook"
bar is very close to Sukhumvit.
This accom is not exactly set up for guests, but is private, comfortable and the best in its price range.
The girls at the bar are lovely, and beer is also 65 baht all day and night for guests.

Certainly not the best standard of accom I have stayed in, but for location, attitude, efforts to take care of guests, friendly "home", all the help you ever need, and complete lack of hustling or bill padding, this is the place to be.
Kudos to Jeremy and Som for their outstanding hospitality and a memorable stay.

BTW - may hotel rooms have air con - which means a choice of being cold (on) or hot (off). Most of these rooms ALSO have fans, which I found to be great for the sinuses.

Thanks to the cleaning lady for sometimes bringing me gifts of coconut sticky rice, the other cleaner for bringing me curry puffs, and the brekky lady who always started the day off with a smile.

  • Liked — The owners, the location, the other guests, the PRICE.
  • Disliked — The 'backpacker rooms' hehehehe
