“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2013

What can I say - a great hotel!

I only booked here due to trip advisor - hence feeling the need to recommend. I've been to Bangkok a few times and thought I knew my way around, however this place is in a great location. Right next to river pier 13 - perfect for getting around. Plus it's walking distance to Koa San Road.

From the get go really friendly staff - I rocked up at 10am, yet despite a 2pm check in I was given a room. The room in question was immaculately clean. I had a corner room - no view to talk of, unlike the much hyped 'river view' rooms. Unless your a cave dweller, do yourself a favour, go for a corner room, nice and quite, save yourself £30 a night and head to a bar in Thornburi to 'watch the world go by'. It's a short hop across the river - 3tht (6p!!) and the beer is a third of price.

Nice pool, good restaurant, free wifi, good location and attentive service.

What's not to like?!

We stayed at the Navalai in Sept 2013, following a week in a 5star hotel in Bali (which I admit may have clouded our judgement). We're not generally fussy but unlike the other reviewers we were really disappointed by this hotel, lots of little things were wrong with it and we did think about moving before the end of our stay.

The good:

- The location is great, in the old part of town, right next to a river boat stop and a 5 min walk from Kao San Road.
- The restaurant food was really lovely. We ate here once due to a rainstorm and it was so nice that we ate there twice more during our stay.

The bad:

Pool - When we arrived the first thing we did was visit the roof bar and pool (this was one of the reasons we had chosen the hotel), but the area and furniture was all a little shabby and the pool water looked dirty and had a silver film on it which confirmed that we would not be using it during our stay!

Room:
- The decorative cushions on the bed had lots of white stains on, the duvet cover had a big hole in. We did mention this to staff but they just stopped putting the cushions on and turned the duvet upside down!
- The bathroom was tired with broken tiles and the loo roll holder fell off while we were there (not replaced).
- The room smelled terrible, like damp, every time we returned from a trip out - I think we must have just got used to it.
- We were in a city view room which faced a street of bars. The windows were really thin so all you could hear before the bars closed at about 1am was bad karaoke (even louder than the TV). I can usually sleep through anything but this was really loud, by the end of the week if we got back to the room before 1 we just sat on the balcony and listened to the music (if you can't beat em join em!)
- The satellite TV stopped working after our first night, staff unable to fix
- DVD player didn't work either

Staff - Some really friendly, some quite rude. We complained about some of the things mentioned but not much was done.

Overall, the hotel really isn't a 4 star by any stretch of the imagination but if you accept that it's a bit grubby and noisy, more like a 3star then the location is great.

Room Tip: Facing the river may be less noisy (although more expensive)

The staff are friendly and helpful. The location is very good for sightseeing, being adjacent to the river ferry. There is no public transport nearby, so taxi is the best way to arrive and depart.

Breakfast was a let-down. Only three kinds of fruit; the coffee was too hot and had very little taste (almost certainly because it was too hot); the bread was of standard quality; the orange juice resembled something reminiscent of a child's painting set, and had almost nothing to do with the fruit after which it was named. The eggs and bacon were excellent.

The same evening we had a drink on the riverside decking. Like hotels the world over, management seem convinced that we all like listening to cheesy music while we eat and drink. I asked for it to be turned down, but it made no difference. It ruined my drink. I ended up with my hands pressed against my ears because it was so awful.

The roof top swimming pool had a nice location, but was suffering a little moss around the edges.

Room Tip: Ask for a riverside room.

After 5 weeks of travelling we wanted a couple of nights in a nice hotel but still in a good location to go shopping and go to Khosan road in the evenings - this hotel was perfect! Lovely setting by the river (although we had a view of the city from our room) and this is where you have breakfast. The breakfast was the best we'd had in Asia, but not surprised as you can pay 250 baht per person for breakfast even if your not staying here. The private pier is great for exploring Bangkok, and it only costs 100 baht or less to get the main shopping malls. Khosan road is 10 minutes walk away so good for evenings.

Nice big rooms with everything you could want. However, for £70 a night I didn't actually think the quality of rooms was that much better than rooms we'd paid £30 or less a night for elsewhere in Asia! a couple of the tiles on the floor were cracked, and the bath/shower had seen better days. The shower didn't stay up so I had to take it off the stand when showering (unless you under 5ft tall and could get under it!!).

Also, the swimming pool didn't look the cleanest. The area around it and sunbeds was lovely, but the pool clearly had green scum lines all the way round!!

Overall we enjoyed our stay, but a couple of things made us think was it worth paying double what we had elsewhere & apart from breakfast nothing else was any better. Maybe you pay for setting/location i.e. riverside.

We stayed here for 4 nights prior to sarting a tour. ( Sadly we had to move to the Bangkok cente for the trip which in comparison was awful). The rooms were vbery comfortable, airy and particularly clean. We had a room on the 4th floor with a balcony overlooking the river. This was excellent value for money. Spent time watching people from the balcony. We were on the ferry route so it made the hotel an excellent choice for travelling around. Breakfast was good. ( we learnt that breakfast in SE asia wasn't up to much but here it is)

Staff were very helpful, particularly the youg man who persevered in gettnig us a taxi!

Close to the Khao San road area though a little out of the centre. The ferry made up for this. Good restaurants nearby.

Would recommend this withoout hesitation.

Room Tip: Have a room overlooking the river

This was our accommodation for the first night of our trip to South East Asia. We were very impressed by the room and the resort itself. It was clean, exotic and exactly what you want in luxury accommodation. The hotel was very peaceful and the breakfast was delicious. The pool was beautiful and being on the roof had an interesting aspect over the city. Also the location was excellent, although it is far from the airport which we arrived at and the taxi driver definitely took us on the long route to get there. Very close to Khao San Road, we really enjoyed walking there for dinner and shopping, where there was a fun atmosphere and some great street side stalls. We also took the ferry at the back of the hotel straight to the Grand Palace which was quick, cheap and easy. Later we hired a tuk-tuk back here from the BK shopping centre which didn't cost much and was a fun journey. Would highly recommend this accommodation and will definitely stay here again if visiting Bangkok.

Room Tip: We didn't have a view of the river but we still had a lovely room and were not bothered by noise...

A stylish hotel in a great area of Bangkok. The rooms with a river view are great and well worth the extra cost for both ambience and quietness. The pool on the roof top is small but adequate enough for relaxing and offers good bar and food service. Staff are pleasant and friendly.

Room Tip: Take high floors
