“NOT as advertised, but nice, upscale tourist hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2009

Like many small, boutique hotels the Aspen Suites seems compelled to exaggerate its status, which is going to lead to disappointed guests, and this is a shame because when reviewed for what it is, not what is claims to be, this is a very nice, upscale two-star tourist hotel that can enjoy a strong position within the Bangkok hotel market.

To not waste time for some, let me dive right into what this hotel is not.

The Aspen Suites is not a business hotel. It is not a luxury hotel. It is not a high-end hotel. It is not an oasis. It is not a four-star hotel, no matter what it self reports to Expedia. You will not feel compelled to lounge around at the hotel rather than go out into the City.

If you were looking for any of the above, stop reading now as you should move on. For others, please allow me to provide what is largely a very positive review.

First, a note on stars and satisfaction ratings. People often confuse hotel rankings with hotels ratings. A hotel can be a four-star hotel and only earn two stars for services, and vice versa. The Aspen is a two star tourist hotel that offers four star service.

To help place it in the hierarchy of hotels, Americans should think of the Aspen as the nicest Red Roof Inn they have ever seen, or perhaps the lowest Holiday Inn Express. It is not, and I truly stress this with no disrespect, even to the level of a Courtyard by Marriott. For Europeans or those familiar with European budget/ boutique hotels, you likely know what to expect. The Aspen compares favorably with an All-Seasons.

The hotel is new, immaculately maintained and yet to show any serious signs of wear and tear. However, it is evident the property was built on a budget. To a former construction worker, the workmanship flaws are evident and everywhere. Drawers that don't properly align, odd sloping tiles, cheap fixtures. The maintenance team will have its challenges as the hotel ages, but for now these do not detract from the experience.

But let's put aside the negatives, and focus on the good.

Location: Not for those with mobility problems, the hotel is set deep on Soi 2, which is perfect for providing enough distance from the nightlife to keep the noise down. A 10-15 minute walk gets you to Sukhumvit, a main street, and then a short walk to the Skytrain.

Breakfast: Tasty and hot, with enough selection to meet most tourist standards. Eggs cooked to order upon request. Don't dally however, because they stop replenishing the buffet at 10am for a 10:30 service stop.

Lunch/ Dinner: A very nice selection of dishes, with a set lunch option. Better yet, the pricing is competitive with local restaurants, something not typically found at a hotel. Everything is standard fare, nothing extravagant, but nothing like that should be expected from a tourist hotel. When you want a nice dinner, you'll eat in at the Aspen, when you want more, you'll go out to a fancy restaurant. It's that simple.

Room: I stayed in a King Grand Deluxe Suit. The room was clean, spacious and the bed firm, but adequate. The bathroom was a bit disappointing. The water pressure was only moderate - unusual for Bangkok - and when the shower head was set to "high" the water mostly just dribbled down the side. The flat panel TV are excellent and the picture quality will vary by satellite strength. I do not recall whether the hotel included any premium channels like HBO. The kitchenette is a nice touch, as is the full-size 'fridge. You won't do any serious cooking (and there were no pots or pans anyway) but you can use the microwave and the storage space. A slight thumbs down on the mini-bar. The hotel marks each item such that it can't be used and then replaced. I don't mind paying a premium for convenience, but if I replace it before the room is serviced then the hotel has not lost anything. The marking of the hotel contributes to an overall feeling of cheapness. However, and this is a big however, the prices are the best I've seen at any hotel other than the Sheraton Hong Kong (which is 7/11 + 10-percent.) At the Aspen you will only pay double the convenience store price, not four or five times. As the nearest 7/11 is 15 minutes walk, you will want to pick up snacks before arriving. The free tethered broadband is a nice touch and its speed was fine.

Property: Clean - can't repeat that enough - well maintained. It's okay. The pool is smallish, but nice and a family with kids could enjoy a refreshing dip. Don't expect to lounge about or have the style of pool experience you would find at a three star or better property.

Staff: Outstanding. Simply outstanding. Very friendly, efficient, good English skills at the front desk.

Value: For July '09, not a great deal. This is a buyer's market in BKK, and for about $30 more than the Aspen is asking you can stay at the five-star Conrad or Plaza Athenee (Aspen = 1800 baht, Athenee = 2800 baht, Conrad = $90). However, if the pricing holds as the other hotels return to normal or high-season pricing, then this hotel should prove very popular.

Conclusion: I recommend this hotel to budget minded tourists of all varieties, provided they plan to get out of the hotel for most days (and shouldn't we all so plan?) Travelers seeking easy access to the nightlife will also enjoy this property, as will backpackers seeking to upgrade their Thailand experience for a few nights. The Aspen is a delightful upscale tourist hotel that I hope proves to be very successful.

I'm a single guy and, as such, wanted to experience the Bangkok nightlife.

This hotel was nearly perfect in my opinion. About 5 minutes walk to the Nana Entertainment Complex so you're close to all of the action but remote enough to be away from all the noise.

My room (The Deluxe Suite) was fantastic, very clean and spacious. Essentially it was a small apartment.

The staff were, without exception, very friendly and accommodating. My one request while there (replacing the battery in the alarm clock, was attended to immediately.

Housekeeping was done daily. Breakfast buffet was excellent and I loved that it was available until 10.30am so I could have a bit of a lie in. Likewise the restaurant was top notch and I ate there regularly.

Also, should you wish to have a guest back at your room, they only need hand their ID in at the desk. No joiners fee and no condescending looks from the staff when they are coming or going.

Loved this place and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Had a wonderful stay at Aspen Suites in June 2009. We found the rooms to be spotless, comfortable, yet not decadent. Aspen Suites takes a more minimalist approach to their accommodations without feeling as if your missing anything. The staff are extremely accommodating from the front desk to the house keeping staff. The kitchen is fully visible and maintained to the highest standard. The complimentary breakfast was always a mix of Western as well as Thai standard and always high quality. I've recommended this site to several friends. The hotel is in the middle of everything and within walking distance to shopping, the sky train or just about anything you could need. Don't forget to walk to the end of the street for a meal at Lee Cafe.

We looked around a lot on the net before finalising this property.
We booked finally with an online chat with the reservations via their website, which I must say is very thorough!
The first room we got was a bit noisy..top floor and the water pump made a lot of noise. we complained gently the next day, and they graciously changed the room without any coaxing.

It is new, well maintained, quite slick, and the rooms are very large and comfortable. The deluxe studio had a small kitchenette, no utensils though so i don't see the point! Tea coffee facilities, largish fridge ( not a tiddly minibar one), small table for two. I did think the only thing we really missed was a nice comfy sofa.
No carpetting though...
The bed was comfy...TV lcd big screen though the reception not very clear...we didi complain twice...the engineer came in to fix it...but it didnt really help.
It had a large bathroom..though the bathroom supplies were not of very good quality...which didnt really matter since we never use hotel supplies!
Hot water however was an issue...it yo-yoed from very hot to cold too soon for my comfort...so land up adjusting every 2 minutes or so.
There was a seperate changing / wardrobe area which was also really nice. They provided ironing board when asked for.

The restaurant kitchen staff was nice...remembered exactly wwhat we ordered the previous day..very small restaurant though. Simple but good breakfast.
The service staff was certainly lazy...you had to ask for coffee...etc..but you're sure to never get it.
all other staff was very friendly. Nice tuk-tuk drop till the main road...and then only 5 min walk to sky train..however equally cheap to take a taxi around...be sure to bargain hard!
All in all...we liked the place.
If you are in Bangkok.. this place is great..since u step out anyway.
Also the next soi is very seedy...but has a great Pizza place...
but this soi was very clean, quiet and nice!
For an in-resort experience for families with very small children, I will not reccomend this place.
The pool is small but sufficient.

Very good staff, excpet for the service staff in the restaurant

It was a trip to South east asia with family & children. Our concern was that we dont land up in the shady area of bangkok. So we booked up this hotel in business area .Very chic trendy & clean room. kitchen bathrooms were fresh & clean.
But people at reception were terrible! we were in a group of SEVEN booked three rooms. we all used to sit in one room for tea & coffee.once or twice we asked for extra sugar or tea bags they flatly refused," we cant give you more than two".
I felt they some how want to make money from the customer over than the room tariff ,they asked us to pay for the bathroom slipper which were not there in our room.
we booked our accomodation through expedia .while booking it kept showing that our stay with hotel includes breakfast but after we finished paying the print out had nothing about breakfast.
Later I got to know from hotel that in Asia they dont provide breakfast to Expedia customer.

This hotel is very good the rooms are large staff very helpful and a good price and food is excelent.
The hotel is off the main Sukhumvit road and is located at the end of Soi 2 approx 500 yards it is in a dead end so no traffic passes so not many taxis but it is a 5 minute walk to the main bustling road so not realy a problem , however we had to show most of the taxi drivers a map on how to find it I think if you tell them soi2 and the Marriott hotel then you should be ok .
The rooms are spaciouse and very clean and tidy I would definetly stay again

We stayed here in Nov 2008. We arrived very late at night and tired from a 15+hour commute to get to Bangkok, and found that they had no room for us even though we had paid already. Although they were apologic and arranged for us to stay at another hotel, this was so inconvenient, and disappointing. We had to move our luggage to this other hotel, which was not the same standard as Aspen in any means, and move our luggage again back to Aspen the next day before we where able to explore Bangkok. Not a good start at at all! The room and hotel itself in Aspen was beautiful and clean as depicted in their photos. The breakfast was the same old tasteless food they had everyday. The place is set in a quite residential area, so there is about a 10minute walk to Sukhumvit, and another 5 minutes to the closest BTS station.
