“A tragedy in Making”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

We stayed in this hotel from 16th - 19th Jan 2013. We were on out honeymoon and was expecting great from the hotel... However it was a complete paradox... the rooms were small. While checking in I requested room with a view as I am on my honeymoon and I was given a room with a single window which opens to a back alley. When we entered the room the room could be measured in 6 yards from the door to the wall. Didn't like the rooms at all. On asking for electric kettle for which I was suppose to be charged 30 bahts per day never showed up on the 1st day. 4 follows including twice to the reception and still no output. Next day we requested them for warm water or kettle and it did came after 1.30 hours after the request was made and it was done after 2 follow up's. Didn't know what was wrong. No internet option was available to us. For breakfast somedays they gave me a voucher and for some day told me to just mention my room nos. Dont know if its work this way only , I personally found it unproffesional. Also the rooms walls are paper thin, could here people knocking doors or even playing truth and dare. I had better experience in Singapore and Pattaya. They need to work on their room service.

The hotel requires some work to be done in room service and on the requirements of their guests. It almost ruined my honeymoon.. only bangkok shopping saved me... ;P

Room Tip: Check rooms before accepting the keys..

This hotel offers you a lot more than the price you pay. Excellent budget hotel with clean rooms and good food. Only downward is that the staff doesn't understand English well. So the communication became a little bit of a hassle. Anyways recommend!

We knew Bangkok was, like Manila, mad. Therefore, we chose a hotel that is relatively far from the noise and the action and settled with The Ecotel Bangkok.

The night we arrived there, we were scammed by a taxi from the train station (who made us pay 5x what we should have paid) and when we told the hotel staff about this, they were so concerned. They wanted to know the details, the plate number, and they wanted to call the police. Because Thai letters are different, we cannot figure out the characters on the taxi's plate. Unfortunate, but they treated us with so much concern in the hotel that we feel like they really look after their guests.

Our room is on the 4th floor and while it says everywhere that smoking is strictly prohibited, the hallways still smells like smoke (at least to me who doesnt smoke) because there is a small pocket area for smoking on our floor.

Our room had a nice, large bed and a number of pillows. The sheets where white and fresh. We had 2 curtains, one to block out the light if we choose to and the other is sheer if we want the light to pass through. The windows are all locked.

The bathroom is nice and big, with modern amenities and is replenished daily with toiletries (soap, toothpaste, glasses).

The airconditioning works perfectly well. The room's size is very decent and the breakfast consists of traditional and non-traditional Thai dishes.

We did not realize that our travel to Bangkok coincides with Songkran Festival - the Thai New Year where water is the here for the day. The locals were all nice and friendly and, well, let's just say our walk from MBK to the hotel did not leave us dry.

As soon as the concierge saw us, he was smiling and almost laughing and apologizing but he said it is necessary for us to experience it. I thought it was fun since they are getting the water straight from the tap anyway. The water was ice cold, by the way, which was a great relief considering we were there for summer.

If I will go back to Bangkok, I wouldn't mind staying at this hotel again.

Room Tip: The travel and tours desk right by the entrance actually has cheap, guided tours with nice guides.

At first sight, the hotel looks exactly the same as the picture on the web or even nicer. The room is warm, clean and well-organized and well-equipped. The receptionists are all friendly and always available to support us. Everytime you request, they will rapidly check the room condition, fix the equipments and answer our concerns. Overall, I am satisfied with the hotel's services. However, i think it takes quite a long time to walk to the nearest BTS (skytrain) but only takes 10 min to Plantinum and Pradium Shopping Mall. Otherwise, there are funny problems with the water heater which responses your adjustments at least five minutes later after you make a move. It means you need to be so skillful to achieve the water temperature that you want haha (Be careful because you can easily get a flu). To people who have troubles in sleeping, there is always breezing sound from the air conditioner.

We stay here for 3 nights in December. We took only the breakfast from the hotel. Unfortunately it is the same type of Menu every day so much so we did not want to have the breakfast on third day. Some days fruit dishes were over (2 days). Mind you this by 8.30 am. At least for the next half an hour these things were not replaced!

I want to do my online checking for the flight. For that matter hotel staff was not helpful. They asked me to go to an internet cafe.!

We are much satisfied about the rest of the things.

We booked a twin room during the Christmas season so the rates were a bit higher than normal. The room on the 3rd floor was adequate in terms of size and amenities.
Basic toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, shower cap, cotton buds, towels were provided in the bathroom.

However, the jug kettle, standard in most hotel rooms, was absent. But they kindly brought up a thermos of hot water, if you ask, at no charge. This we did twice a day to make a our coffee and tea. We brought our own tea bags/coffee sachets.

There was a safe deposit box in the room but you had to get the key from the reception. There was no charge but if you lose the key, it will cost you 2,000 baht.

There was a tour desk at the reception which we made use of to book a city tour of the the Marble temple, the Golden Buddha and the Reclining Buddha. Taxis outside the hotel will charge you a flat rate for your destination so it is advisible to walk a bit further to flag down a passing cab which goes by the meter. So much cheaper too. Taxis generally cost less than the tuk-tuk, which also goes by a flat rate. Be warned - some taxis will quote you a ridiculously low fare, but they will detour to a jewellery, gemstone or silk shop to get a commission from these places, then only they will take you to your final destination.

At the entrance of the hotel, turn left and you can walk along a narrow street to the main road, Rajpraprop. Pratunam Market, Pratunam Complex, Indra Square which is a complex next to the Indra Ragent Hotel are all situated here, 20 minutes away, not 5 minutes as some reviewers said.

We tried the buffet breakfast once, which cost us 200 baht. There was quite a variety of choices ranging from Western, like eggs, sausages, chicken ham, to Oriental like congee, fried noodles to Vegetarian, juices, coffee, tea, fruits, cookies, cakes. I think it is good value for money.

The hotel has two restaurants located next door. One offers Western food and the other Thai. There are also plenty of cafes and eating shops nearby. Street stalls were plentiful but we were wary of trying of those.

One disadvantage of this location is that it is quite far from the BTS Sky train station or the Airportlink. From the airport, we took the Cityliner, which is a commuter line, to the Rajprarop station, costing 40 bahts. Journey time was 30 mins as it had to stop at every station. From the station, we took a taxi, costing 60 bahts to the hotel, total 70 bahts each. This was possible because of our light luggage. You can also take the Airport Express to the Makkasan station (150 bahts), then a taxi to the hotel. The express line takes only 17 mins.

However, for our return trip, due to our heavy bags, we took a taxi, which we booked from the taxi service stand, outside the hotel, costing 400bahts (each 200 bahts). Don't mind paying more for the convenience.

Bangkok is really a shopping and food paradise. Since there were two of us, we found it easier to eat at the food courts in Indra Square and Platinum Mall. You can try so many varieties under one roof at reasonable prices.

Good location, comfortable room and cheap rates - this sums up the Ecotel. Will stay here again if we do decide to return to Bangkok.

We stayed here because it was one of the few hotels in bangkok that actually had a 4-person room. This hotel is good if you just want a place to sleep in a fairly busy neighborhood and you can walk a lot. Closest shopping is Pratunam clothes market 5 minutes walk away. Taxis in the area will try to swindle you by quoting fixed prices. Skyrail and metro are a good 20 minutes walk away. I agree with other reviewers that area restaurants are overpriced and empty. Better to hang out in nearby Sukhumvit or Chidlom.

I stayed in 2 rooms at this hotel. 3 nights in a 4-person room (344) and 1 night in a 2-person room (343). 344 was clean, comfortable and in good shape, with a window on the street. I echo other reviewers' comments that the beds are hard (but hard spring beds are found everywhere in Thailand) and the bathrooms are not cleaned very well. One cool feature is a central control panel near the bed for all light switches and AC. Staff were indeed less helpful than Thai people usually are, and it's not just the language barrier. They are a bit impatient and eager to get rid of you rather than solve your problem. I had to call 3 times to ask about laundry prices as the operator kept answering the wrong question then hanging up on me.

The biggest issue we had was when we wanted to switch to a 2 person. The front desk lady we spoke with (a manager type, didn't catch her name) quoted us a higher price than what we were finding online. She said she could not match the online price and told us to book it online. When we booked and came back to show her the confirmation screen on the laptop, she refused to give us the new room until her central office confirmed that our booking came through (which could have been 30 minutes or a few hours, who knows). My husband had to scream at her in front of everyone for her to finally give us a room that we could move into immediately and get on with our day. I was really disappointed by this as Thai people are usually so courteous and kind, and the other staff at Ecotel were indeed politer.

Room 343 was dirtier, with splashes on the wall by the trash, mould in the shower, a REALLY musty smelling bed that stank up the whole room. So...overall, be careful about this place.

Room Tip: Rooms facing street have better view but street sounds all night.
