“Beautiful countryside a short ride from Taipei.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

I took the train from taipei to the start of the pingxi railroad line, which was a 40 minute ride. From there the views of the taiwan countryside aboard the railroad train are breathtaking. I stopped at ping xi, and at shimen station. There are plenty of shops and restaurants along the way. If the weather was a little dryer, I imagine it would be very nice to walk from town to town. It's best to allot a whole day for this trip.

“A fun and inspiring activity to do with friends/family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

Lighting up sky lanterns is a definite must! Located right at the Ping His railway station, the railway line is lined with shops selling paper lanterns, souvenirs, and small eats; however, the main attraction here are the sky lanterns.

For about TWD 150 you can buy a large paper lantern, in which you can write your wishes on all four sides before setting it alight and off into the sky. It really does give you that warm fuzzy feeling as you write your hopes and dreams alongside your family or friends. The shop we bought from offered to take wonderful photos of us holding the lantern on the railway track before releasing it into the air. As you can imagine, it's a lot more beautiful lighting up these lanterns at night along with a whole bunch of other people (during the lantern festival), hence a wonderful photographing opportunity!

As a gift for your loved ones or a keepsake for your own memories, I recommend buying one of the pretty little souvenirs. The lantern souvenirs each have different blessings written on them and cost between TWD70-200 (depending on size and whether or not it has LED lights inside).

As for transport, it's fairly easy since it's right at the railway station. Driving here on the other hand can be a little troublesome with those who get carsick, as there are many winding roads.

A magical place for sky lanterns & soaking in nostalgia. Difficult to get to, but worth the trouble. Love it this place.

“Train moves very slow”

Keep dozing off while seated as the train moves very slowly and it takes quite long to reach next station

“Worth a Repeat Visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

The Ping Hsi Branch Railway Line was one of our trip's highlights. We were staying at Jiufen and took a short bus ride to Ruifang where we bought our train tickets (valid for whole day) and which was also the starting point of our Pingxi Railway trip.

We did hop-offs and hop-ons along the way to visit the various attractions and activities. The stations included Houtong and Shifen. The train ride along the way was nice and the scenery was lovely.

At Houtoung, we visited the Cat Village, which is located just beside the train station. As the name suggests, there are numerous cats of different breeds, colours, shapes and sizes to be seen while strolling through the village. There are dogs to be found as well co-existing in harmony with the cats.

At Shifen, there is a magnificent waterfall within walking distance (about 30 minutes) from the train station. The waterfall is quite high and makes for good fotos. Along the railway tracks, one of the main activities is the releasing of sky lanterns. It's a "must do" activity at Shifen. In addition, there are stalls selling cheap and delicious snacks!

We spent a full day for our Ping Hsi Branch Railway Line trip and had an enjoyable excursion. We would certainly consider consider doing it again if we visit Taiwan in the future. Definitely worth a repeat visit!
