The Grand Hyatt chain in Asia is usually a great bet for a place to stay as they tend to have great locations, large impressive looking properties with a “wow factor” reception area and good sized rooms that are well equipped for the business traveler especially. The Grand Hyatt Taipei is further proof of this.

It is brilliantly located right next to the impressive Taipei 101 building and mall. Taipei 101 currently being the tallest building in the world. The hotel looks like a Grand Hyatt and I guess they must have a kind of “master plan” design that gets tweaked for each new location. When you walk into the reception area it looks stunning, all marble and open space as it stretches up to the 5th floor. The reception is friendly and efficient. When you check in they try and sell you an upgrade to the 22nd and above floors which are the “executive floors” that give you free internet access, use of the lounge with free breakfast and evening food and drinks. It can be worth it if you are likely to use all 3 of these.

One tip either way is to ask for a high floor and ask for a view over the front of the hotel as some of the rooms on the lower floor have views of a wall. The view across the front of the hotel means you have a great view across to the hills and the magnificent Taipei 101 building which looks even better at night.

The rooms and bathrooms are a good size, and the bed is very comfortable (with great pillows!). One thing I like a lot is the air conditioning is so quiet you almost have to double check to make sure it is on as you hear nothing. This for me is a big plus as you will need it.

The safe is huge and you can easily pop laptops and the like in easily and the desk is a good size and there is lots of storage space both in the cupboards and on shelves that the TV stands on. They really have got a great offer for the business traveler.

The shopping is brilliant as you have all the top end shops in Taipei 101, with some good restaurants as well as other department stores like “New York New York”. It is also in very easy walking distance of the Sun Yat Memorial Hall and the Tunghwa Night Market. It takes about an hour to get to the hotel in good traffic from the international airport.

Nice, hotel in a good location (next to Taipei 101 - the tallest building in the world). The hotel was so close and our room had a view of Tpe 101, but we had to get so close to the window and look all the way up to even see it! The room is clean, but small. We have stayed at much better places on this trip (Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia), but have not paid as much as we did here! Next time, I'll probably look at someplace else, with this hotel as a safe alternative.

This hotel was spectacular! I was told it was the third or fourth nicest in Taipei, which is hard for me to imagine. The staff are the friendliest and most helpful I have ever seen. No worries about only speaking English here. All of the staff are fluent in English, Chinese, and I don't know what other languages. The rooms were spacious, comfortable, quiet, clean. It made for a great retreat after a day of touring the city in the heat of summer. The pool looked nice (but I didn't go in). The fitness center was impressive for a hotel. The hotel restaurants had excellent food (albeit pricier than if you were to dine outside the hotel). The breakfast buffet at Cafe (priced at 715 NT, around $22 USD) had an excellent selection of fresh fruit, pastries, waffles, pancakes, fresh squeezed juices, and a variety of other western and chinese offerings. The buffet dinner at Cafe (I paid around $45 USD) was also very good, but leaned more to the Chinese style of cooking. Although I had a wonderful salad, desert, and other western foods. The hotel staff was overly helpful when giving out maps, recommending restaurants, etc... Taxis are very cheap and the MRT (subway system) is within walking distance of the hotel and very tourist friendly. You can buy a 1 day pass for 200 NT (and get a 50 NT refund if you return your pass at the end of the day).

  • Liked — Quality, friendliness, cleanliness
  • Disliked — No grocery or 7-11 in immediate proximity
  • Tips/Secrets: — Join the gold passport club and get free coffee/tea delivered to your room in the morning. Put up your do not disturb sign if you're in your room during the day, numerous knocks for extra maid service, ice, turning down covers, etc...

We selected this hotel based on reviews and location to the Taipei 101 building and had the hotel arrange an airport pickup for us. When we moved our flight up a couple of hours, our hosts called the hotel to make the change and also insisted they meet us as we came out of customs instead of us calling the hotel from the airport to say we had landed. When we walked out of customs there was a sign with our name and a hotel representative who helped us with our luggage. He called the car down and we were off within five minutes. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted by name by a hotel representative who said she would take us to our room and check us in there. No waiting in line at the front desk. She gave the bellman our room number and he disappeared with our luggage only to arrive in the room moments after we did. She asked us which newspaper we would like delivered each morning, went over the room charges, and showed us the views from our rooms. We called the Hyatt main reservation number when making the initial reservation to explain we were traveling with an adult child and were inquiring if they had any suites instead of two separate rooms. The reservation agent told us which rooms would accomodate a roll away bed. This was the smartest thing we did. The suite not only had the roll away already set up, it was a very comfortable bed and not a child's cot. The living room area had plenty of space to accommodate this, but also because of the room's location had windows on three sides of the suite. We had a great view of 101, the park across the street and the whole downtown. Fabulous views everywhere. The first morning we walked to the Dr. Sun Yet-sen Memorial Hall and watched Tai Che. Later went back to see the changing of the guard. It's only a block away. While the June weather was hot and humid, the pool temperature was perfect. This is the only pool we've ever been in with the right temperature. The chaises had four inch thick padding covered with a very thick towel. Each chair had a another thick and absorbent towel to dry off with. We we're enjoying it so much we ordered dinner, American style, to eat under the pergola there. We had breakfast both mornings at the hotel that was fabulous. Best breakfast in a hotel, ever. The price is high, though, so bring your appettite. They have numerous stations for every traveler from around the globe. You can try any dish you'd like, or stick with your own comfort food. Our bed was comfortable, enough drawer space, bath had tub and shower with good water temperature and pressure. We had an evening flight out and upon check in, the hotel representative said we could keep the room until 4 pm and they would hold our luggage until the limo took us back to the airport at 6. However, since there wasn't any seating available in the lobby and we chose not to wait it out at the pool, we asked if a limo would be available to take us immediately. They were happy to help out. English was never a problem. We asked where we could find an unusual camera battery and they located a shop for that. Gave us a card to give to the taxi driver with that address and the hotel's for return trip. While we did have to open doors and push elevator buttons ourselves, unlike some other reviewers had mentioned, the big picture is we now have a newer standard for our hotel visits. When we would get off the elevators, if you didn't head directly to your destination, a representative was always waiting asking if they could help with anything. We would highly recommend this hotel. And finally, our daughter turned 25 during our stay and the hotel sent up an entire cake, gratis. We felt they really cared about us enjoying our visit. And we did, mostly because of this hotel.
