“Great Concierge, Hotel Under Much Needed Renovation...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

We just returned from Taiwan and the Sky Lantern Festival, and chose to stay at the Grand Hyatt using points. The hotel is grand in size with a resplendent marble lobby that is enormous. The Club Lounge was relocated onto the second floor whilst under renovation which, although a little awkward, is staffed by attentive, well informed and helpful staff. They helped us lock down travel details to Pingxi and find other things to do without a hitch.

The Club breakfast was very good with a lot of variety. We had personalized omelettes, fresh fruit, cheeses, pastries, etc. The Chinese food was very good too. The evening snacks were equally yummy and diverse.

In contrast, the room was worn and smelled of old age. We changed rooms but it didn't help. You can see the partition behind which the renovations were occurring, but to their credit, we never heard a peep! We could definitely see the age in the tarnished, old-style shower enclosure, water-damaged wood trim, etc. I think the remodel job will likely match the splendor of the lobby and look forward to the much needed work.

The hotel lobby level staff were inconsistent helping us get taxis and only once spoke to drivers to confirm that they knew where we wanted to go, and only once gave us a taxi number receipt.

We purchased a Seven-Colored Jade vase from a shop on the lobby level. It was absolutely gorgeous, and we bartered a good price on it too. The jade is unique to Taiwan and either heavy or lightweight and translucent. The staff were very helpful and even gave a wheeled carry-on for our purchase at no cost.

I have to say that even though the hotel was under renovation, I would come again to the Grand Hyatt Taiwan versus a return trip to the Grand Hyatt Macau where the Staff were rude, unhelpful, cold and unwelcoming. They refused us access to the Club and did not even bother to help or make us feel welcome. It is unfortunate that the Grand Hyatt has such inconsistent training and delivery, especially with rooms $300-450 USD per night!

Please note: the bed was very hard, which is actually pretty typical in Asia, and when we asked if we could change rooms, they moved us, but the bed was still very hard. Their solution? Housekeeping not only moved everything, but they put an incredibly soft mattress cover (or two?) on for us and we slept like babies! Did I mention how awesome the staff at the Grand Hyatt Taipei were ?! We will be watching for the remodel to finish and planning for a return trip!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Taipei 101. It is styled in a skyscraper pagoda style and quite uniqu...

Spent 5 nights at Grand Hyatt Taipei again.
Same excellent services received again. Staff at the Grand Club even recognized me - I usually only visit Taipei 2-3 times a year. I just love the consistency and the attention to detail.
On the renovation, it's handled very well. You can't really feel that half of the hotel is under renovation: no noise, no construction works walking around, not a sign of construction. The staff also told me that renovation on the right-side (west) will complete in May. After that they'll start renovating on the left-side (east). I was also told that the entire property will be shut down for some time (1-2 weeks?) in August.

The moment you enter the hotel it is one big apology. The club is in an open area in an UN-used space and yet they still charge $$$ to "upgrade" The rooms are dreadful - old, dated, hard beds and noisy yet they still charge as if a newly opened hotel. Renovation is underway which they keep pointing out - but if you are staying today who cares about what the hotel will be in the future. Try the W Hotel or another

Very hard to find anything wrong during my stay

Great location next to Taipei 101 and 10mins walking distance from the hip shopping area of Xinyi district (星光三越). Room is big with a spacious marble-laid bathroom (bathtub + separate standing shower). Bed was a nice fluffy king with too many pillows for a solo traveller. ;) Getting my in-room wifi up & running was a challenge, with several calls placed to the business desk. Network was iffy at times and I'd to reconnect whenever the connection dropped. They provided free LAN as well which was much better & stable in comparison. Hotel is also very established & well-known so most taxi drivers know where it is immediately when I mention 君悅. Staff are welcoming and friendly. Front desk staff spoke good English though I communicated with them mostly in Mandarin. Excellant place to stay for New Year's countdown as it overlooks the stage for the Taipei countdown concert (臺北市政府跨年演唱會) & fireworks from Taipei 101. Buffet breakfast was ok though variety could be improved, was thoroughly sick of the spread by the fourth morning.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing Taipei 101

When I travel, particularly when I am 10 or so hours off my circadian cycle and in a place where I can't speak the language, and I have to be somewhere sharp and on top of things, the last thing I want in lodging is a cultural adventure. I want clean, quite, decent breakfast, and Internet that works. The Grand Hyatt has all this, plus, the common spaces are impeccably appointed and maintained. Taxis are easy to find, and there are diversions within walking distance--a small night market, and a sort of vertical Rodeo Drive in the famous 101 Tower. The room itself was mostly good--reasonably quiet and nicely decorated. The breakfast is excellent--lots of healthy choices from fish to muselli, interesting fruits, and a section of not-so-good for you but tasty anyway pastries. A little more attention to detail would raise my rating--examples: the room windows were quite dirty, and the bathroom a little tired--caulking around the tub had been replaced numerous times and was cracked and peeling. One odd thing: The outlet in the bathroom takes only a European-style plug (the rest of the room had traditional two-prong American style outlets). I borrowed an adapter from the hotel, only to find that it converted American to European, so it was no help at all. The upshot is that to use a razor or hair styling device, you must be at the desk in the bedroom, and there's no mirror close by. On my last day I did figure out that I could use the outlet for the dryer that appears to be attached to the wall by pulling out a vanity drawer and wriggling my arm over the back of the drawer and feeling around for the outlet. If you have big arms this won't work for you.
