Bid for this hotel on Priceline, which we got for $US112/night. It is a four star hotel, the rooms are ample and the hotel has some on-site restaurants (which I didn't try) and a bakery, which was good. Staff try and change your towels twice during the day, which is wasteful but I'm sure some people like this. It was very quiet, and while the staff tried to be helpful they were not good in helping with recommendations of services and restaurants outside the hotel. It has a business center that is available to people in its premium rooms. Location is good, in West Taipei, which is some distance from the main business center of the city, which is in the East, some distance away.

I stayed here for 3 nights in May.

Firstly, the exterior of the building is quite old. It looks old and worn, however the interior is a nice surprise. The lobby area is quite grand and clean though as others have mentioned, I noticed it can get quite crowded at times as it looks like this hotel is popular with group tours. The staff are very friendly and helpful (though their english is quite poor).

The first thing I noticed when into my room was the cigarette smell even though I requested a non-smoking floor. The stale smell was there the whole time - i think it was flowing through the air conditioning!

The room looks quite new and was fairly large and clean. the bathroom was clean and marbled.

the breakfast buffet was fairly standard compared to other similiar hotels so nothing surprising there.

Overall, considering the price I paid, I was pleasantly surprised. It is also only a 5 min walk to the train station (for a slow walking woman!). I would recommend this hotel to others and would definitely stay here again. I would not recommend this hotel to people who are sensitive to cigarette smoke or people who like to stay walking distance to where the action is as I found the area around the hotel to be quite dull

I got a room which is quite spacious, not as spacious as my colleague room but its ok.
The small marble bathroom is a bit dissapointed.
A lot of Japanese staying in this hotel, the breakfast is normal. There are 2 choices of the restaurant for the breakfast.
Staff is polite and helpful.
Located in the city and near to the subway station.
The hotel is quite old but very clean and well maintained.
The TV position is a bit weird (beside the fridge and the bottom). Bed and blanket is comfortable enough.

Overall experience, satisfied but if I have chance to be in Taipei I would like to try other option.

We stayed at the Bass for 10 days in April 06. Our rooms were good whilst not overly spacious but clean and they were adequate given the time we spent in our rooms. The staff are very polite and will do anything to assit you. Debby in the business centre (located on level 11) booked domestic flights for us -no issue and fast service. The breakfast buffet is worth the cost - good selection to cover all tastes. Nearly all staff speak english. The location wins - easy for our Taiwanese business associates to pick us up from - plenty of bars around - girls too if you want them - you will get hustled - but thats just par for the course in Asia - and its a 10-15 minute taxi ride to anywhere for more restaurants and bars. There is a subway station within 5 minutes walk and the Taipei 101 is just 15 minutes by cab. We paid 4,000 NTD per night plus 10% service charge - which represents great value for money in Taipei. We are retuning to Taipei in May 06 and will be staying at the Bass again.
