Alley Cat is doing several things right. Its a cozy space, it has pretty good beer list and its pizzas are very well done. Not too much sauce, not to much cheese, and we had the Maialona so plenty-o-meat! The crust is cracker crisp with flakey layers, browned nicely which provides a great contrast to salty and cheesy toppings. They also had chili flakes on the table, a nice touch I miss at other joints.
Side-note, we had a pretty disappointing ceasar salad with a) not nearly enough dressing and this Taipei where usually lettuce is drenched in dressing b) dressing that was most certainly from a bottle c) croutons that were just toasted bread, I believe the crouton must have oil and seasoning to really be good enough on a salad or there should at least be enough dressing to coat the crouton. Sad fricking croutons. d) very pathetic pre-shredded processed parmesan shreds. The salad was discounted 50% off because it was the deal of the day. It is pathetic to offer discounted food from your regular menu and then do a below half-assed job preparing it especially on a dish that is so very popular in Taipei. It makes suckers out of your customers.
The takeaway here is go to Alley Cat for pizza and beer and not salad. I think everyone will be happy!
