After reading a bunch of negative reviews on here I was a little bit hesitant to try this place, but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt as there were some good reviews as well. After eating here though I have to say I regret it. The food just wasn't up to par. I've had much better Mexican food for a lot cheaper. Unfortunately Taipei, so far, at least the places I have tried, have proven unable to cook a decent Mexican meal. There might be some others that I have yet to try, so I am still hopeful I can find one. Unfortunately, Mayan is definitely not a place I would visit again. Let me repeat that, I won’t go here again. I am very surprised actually that I find myself writing such a negative review. I had thought this place might actually be good and that the other reviews were wrong, nope, I was wrong, I should have never even tried it.
I really hate writing negative reviews, but this place deserves one.
From what it appears they are not using genuine salsa, they are buying it premade and then plopping down on a dish. And it tastes like over marketed garbage. The Tour Platter that we had was probably the best thing we ate, it wasn't bad, at least the beef part of it was actually good, the chicken though, I don’t know what they do to it, it’s just not as good.
I had the taco's, the first round that came the meat was cold, the cheese was unmelted and there was too much of their sauce dumped on top, the sauce was messy and lazily applied all over the lettuce. After sending it back because the meat was cold the second batch came and the meat was hot, they tasted somewhat better than the first. At least they were hot. I had one steak beef, one spicy beef and a chicken. Their spicy beef taco is quite spicy, I was a little bit surprised given their tour platter didn't have any spicy taste to it at all! Inconsistent that’s for sure. But the spicy beef taco was over powering and ruined the rest of the meal, and in addition it was overly salty. I couldn’t even finish it.
My friend had the Cielo Chicken, it was severely over cooked, dry, salty and overly spicy. And they even recommended it for a women. I don’t get this part of it at all… I tried it, I didn't like it, and agreed that it was dry, overcooked and too spicy.
The total bill came to around 1800NT and they even dared to put a service charge on the bill! I’m sorry, but for NT$1800 for the above and one drink is way over priced. The food we ate here at most is worth NT$600, but with the quality of the food it just isn’t worth it.
The service was hit and miss, sometimes they checked on us, but mostly they didn’t, we had to get up and go find the staff several times, we feel they are not really running a real business here and just by chance due to location that they actually get business.
The atmosphere of this place is good, but once the food comes it just becomes a disappointment and ruins everything. The place has potential, but they need to get a better chef that actually knows how to cook both TexMex and real genuine Mexican Cuisine. It was really a disappointment as many blogs in Taiwan also call it good. Apparently locals here are not very familiar with what real Mexican food should taste like and I suspect this is the only reason this place can stay in business. But I'm sorry, the food is terrible, I am from the US, have eaten at many TexMex places as well as real authentic Mexican cuisine in both the southern US and Mexico. This place cannot even live up Taco Bell as far as I am concerned! Yeah that was mean, but seriously Taco Bell could serve a better meal! Seriously, stay away from this place and go find something else to eat otherwise you’ll surely be disappointed, don’t even try it.
