We arrived in Taipei late last night and there was no doubt that Din Tai Fung would be our first meal today. As usual, awesome experience.
Upon arrival you are put on the wait list and you get to order right away. Your food is ready when your table is ready. American restaurants: learn something here...
The dumplings are absolutely amazing. It is a mystery to me how they can enclose those juicy fillings without having the dough of the skins get soggy. I personally like the vegetarian ones best, as well as the shrimp and green gourd. The appetizers are very good as well with the cucumbers and pea shoots being my favorite. When in season, I strongly recommend the sautéed ferns. Of course, the sticky rice with red beans completes this excellent experience.
I have tried the noodle dishes and soups as well, but these are items that I can also eat at home. As such I only focus on the dumplings.
Finally, as pointed out by some, you can eat at Din Tai Fung also in some selected US locations. However, the mother ship on Xinyi road with its narrow stair case and uninterrupted click clack of the bowls and plates has a flair that no other branch can match.
