For those who are lazy to read the entire story (it's lengthy!), I made a summary:
Location- 80% except that it can be noisy as the main road is just in front of the hotel. Shared lift is inconvenient for those with luggages.
Sleep Quality- 80% Good bedding, good air conditioning, and no smoke smell in the room. Room is of comfortable size.
Service and value- 20% Read the whole story and judge for yourself. Personal encounter- maybe we are really unlucky
Breakfast- 40% At least they attempt to provide breakfast but it was the most horrible breakfast I had. Little Variety and awful cooking. Bad way to start your morning, You are better off eating in one of those cheap eatery on the first level of the hotel. I hope the hotel will remove the complimentary breakfast because its disastrous. This can reduce their operation cost too since they seem very concern about their profits.
Overall- No harm to stay in Saylove for 1 night, You can find plenty of better choices around the same location. The hotel on the 5th level on the same building looks pretty decent and those across the street like cityinn might be a better choice.
So back to my story....
You will read from all the other review raving about its location. It is conveniently located in a building just opposite the Taipei Main Station, which is a major station as it is a transit point to many other places. You can gain easy access to High speed rail, TRA, Metro, Bus terminal and the airport limo bus- Free go from taoyuan airport alighted us right outside the building where the hotel is located.
However, we were quite surprise to find that the hotel wasn't standing in building on its own but located on level 3 of a building alongside with many other small inns and cybercafe coexisting with it. Not that I am bothered but it clearly wasn't so great if you have to share the lift with many other patrons that might not be hotel guest and the lift is not generous enough to accommodate the luggages and other users.
We booked into this place for a period of 6 days but in 4 different segments as we checked in and out due to travel plans to the rest of Taiwan. Given that we are giving them business for almost a week, we expected hospitable Taiwanese to render us assistance and treat us as valued guest but all I can say is that I am very disappointed with the level of service. Even a budget room in Penang, Malaysia beats them hands down in terms of service.
Firstly we encountered a few unhappy incident that I thought wasn't handled very well by the management.
1) When we checked in, the staff didn't look very happy to serve us. She appeared rather snappy when we made some enquiries about directions and ask if there is a laundry service around. I was secretly thinking she might be in the wrong profession if she is not so keen in extending her help to tourist. Or Maybe its a bad day for her.
2) Upon our 2nd check in, it was past 3pm which was way beyond check in time and apparently the room that was allocated to us seem to have some issues with the piping. They wanted us to leave the room so that the plumber could come in and fix it. I know its a small hotel and things like this do happen, but why can't they arrange for the plumber to be in before our check in time or just allocate another vacant room to us instead of having us leave the room when we wanted to get some rest. Strange practice! I was about to tell them, check in time is 2pm, if you need to fix the pipe you should have done so before my check in! Not when I am about to check in and then cause inconvenience to us and waste our time.
3) Upon the 3rd check in, I encountered another unhappy incident with the management and I felt that it wasn't handled well. This incident also left us to think that the hotel management or owner is only interested in making more money and have very little interest for customer satisfaction. The electronic card device in our room was faulty and they had to fix it. As it was late they suggested for us to pack up and move to another smaller room. They made a refund of the difference. However, they told us if they fix it before midnight and if we move back to the same room, no refund would be made. Throughout the incident, we did not sense that the staff was truly apologetic about the inconvenience they have caused in interrupting our rest but I felt we were being accused of the making a fuss over the issue. Worse of all, I was made to feel guilty that the card device had to be fixed late in the night. We were actually told that if we reported the case earlier, they could have it fixed earlier. Hello? Why is that our fault that the fixture in their room broke down and needed urgent attention! We were the real victims as all we wanted to do after a long day of sight seeing, was to REST! We had to pack up everything and move to another room which they did not even send anyone to help us with our luggages.
If you think things could not get anything worse than that, What was worst came in the morning when we made the request to move into our room because we book for consecutive stay, we were told our room was OCCUPIED!!! We were made to check out of our smaller room because someone else is moving into that room and had to wait till 2pm again to re-enter our room we booked for. Which means after the fix the electronic card device, they rented our room that we booked for, out again eventhough we should be given priority since we booked for consecutive stay. They told us this cannot be help because the hotel was fully booked and the rightful check in time was to be 2pm. They actually had the cheek to tell me that. I gave the receptionist on duty a piece of my mind as I was hopping mad.
The manager or owner of this place clearly only care about maximizing their profit. They also have a practice of collecting back the keys while you leave the room for "security" reasons, I hope they don't use the vacant time that you didn't spend in your room and rent it out for people to rest while you are not around. They gave me the vibe that they don't really care about the service which left me unsettled.
We stayed long enough to have met all the receptionist and sadly only 1 of them is friendly and helpful. The others are either too uninterested in their job or too jaded to provide a decent standard of service.
I will make sure I am not on a budget if I ever want to stay in Taipei because seriously there are many better options with far better service oriented staff. We just need to pay a little bit more. Honestly speaking Saylove pricing is not the cheapest, so keep looking before committing.
For whatever reasons you are booked into this hotel, avoid room 336. As it is the end room, alot of...
