“Learn about the history of Dutch occupation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

The Fort Zeelandia Museum within the fort compound exhibits a lot of information about the Dutch occupation some centuries ago. The fort was besieged by Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) for 9 months and the Dutch had to negotiate peace with Koxinga and left Formosa. The fort was later occupied by the navy of the Ching dynasty and later by the Japanese invaders. Within the compound, there were some old cannons built by the Ching government.

“Great history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Anping Fort is a must when in Tainan! Here you can learn everything about the Taiwanese history and how the Dutch tried to defend the city against the Chinese "invaders". The fort is not so old though, since it was in ruins and has been rebuilt and rebuilt. The house of today was built by the Japanese in the 1930's!

“Worth a visit for the history lesson.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

This Fort Zeelandia is worth a visit to look at, especially when coupled with the Anping Tree House attraction which is within walking distance of each other. The museum inside gives you lots of facts about the Dutch colonial era in Taiwan and the Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) era that followed. However, take note that some of the exhibits will be in Chinese. Even then, the artifacts and excavations will provide more than enough pictures for you to take with.

Not much of the original fort remains though. Much of what is left are the results of restoration efforts, especially the tower, which we were surprised that it looked rather modern. However, it is still good to go up to the top of the tower to get good views of Tainan City itself, since most of the city's building are rather short in height. The attraction fee is cheap at NTD 50 and you should spend no more than two hours at this place.
