I Checked into the Hotel Ganesh Himal on May !8th, 2009. After traveling in Asia for six weeks, I had 2 months left on my three and a half month adventure. From the Lonely Planet review, I expected a modest, clean hotel. What I found, was paradise. The rooms were clean to western standards... what a treat for a budget traveler in Asia! Not only that, but the rooms were all being renovated with parquet floors, and bright cheerful paint. Best yet, each had a private bath, western toilet, some had tubs and all the hot water you might want 24 hrs a day. The beds were large clean and comfortable. Within hours, I had decided it would be my home base for the duration of my trip.
The property is conveniently located for anything you may want to do in Kathmandu. It is located just steps from the tourist mecca of Thamel, where most of the restaurants and tourist shopping is centered; all of the convenience but none of the noise. Swayambunath ( the Monkey Temple) is an easy walk, as is Kantipur, Drubar Square, Durbar Marg, The Royal Palace (both old and new). Taxi and rickshaws can take you anyplace else. But you may just want to stay in the hotel for some travel r&r. The gardens are lush, beautiful and relaxing. The perfect place to enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. Your meals can also be served in your room, on any of the numerous terraces, or in the rooftop garden which is also the perfect place to watch the sunset over the Monkey Temple, watch it rise over the Himalayas, or bask in the light of a full moon. The food is varied, fabulous and reasonably priced. The kitchen and wait staff are pleasant, courteous and accommodating.
To get out and about, check in with Prakash or Deepak at the travel desk. They arranged my travel to Chitwan NP, where I rode elephants and hunted for tigers. They booked my 8 day tour to Tibet that I decided to take on fairly short notice handling everything right down to procuring my visa, and booked another short trip to Pokera. They can arrange trekking tours better and more reliably than you will find from the shills on the street in Thamel. Within Kathmandu they can set up tours or arrange for you to have the hotel car and driver for a day exploring in Patan, Bhaktapur or Bodanath. The rates are as reasonable as any you will find.
Finally, that brings me to the staff. From the little man with an amazing smile who minds the gate, to the lovely chamber maids, I was always made to feel like my needs were paramount. The beautiful Maya and her husband Mukhiya run the hotel with an attention to detail that is rare to find. Maya' sister Rinku and Andju keep the front desk running smoothly and efficiently. They also can set you up with dinner reservations if you want a cultural night out, or advise you where to go if you would like to have your own traditional Tibetan clothing, custom tailored. Any little question you may have, ask Rinku. Kansa will likely carry your bags to your room with a smile. He is also responsible for keeping the hot water flowing, the generator running and most of the physical up keep of the hotel. Pushkar is the night manager and will make sure your needs are met regardless of the hour. During the time I was in Nepal, these people became like my family, and the day I finally had to say good bye on July 23, was so sad for me. I miss them terribly and look forward to my next visit. You should too!
So I have not even mentioned that most rooms have color TV and phones, there are 3 computers in the lobby with free internet, There is also wireless service. There is a leave a book, take a book library, and a large parlour where you can meet fellow travelers compare notes and make lifelong friends. Go. Embrace . Enjoy
Sincerely, Candace Kolb, Salt Lake City, UT, USA
