The staff was very helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel restaurant breakfast was decent. The Samsara is located in the Thamel District of Kathmandu.

I stayed for two nights before and two nights after my trek to Annapurna Base Camp. The hotel is just off a Thamel main street so it is well located. It was a haven from the intense sensory experiences of the city. There is a spacious grass park with seating in front of the hotel. The staff were helpful pleasant. The manager was on-site much of the time, eager to respond to any questions or requests.
The rooms were good sized and clean with adequate amenities. After the rigors of A.B.C. the comfort was a delight!
The breakfast was varied and tasty.
I would definitely return to this hotel and hope to do so sometime soon.

We stayed in this hotel only for three days but it was enough to see that the staff do their best to make visit to their hotel a pleasant experience. Though with some nuisances like problems with electricity (it does not depend on the hotel, isn't it? :)), our visit to Nepal turned out to be great, and in much degree we refer it to hospitality and friendliness of Samsara Resort staff. A separate thanks for the cook! :)

Don't be fooled by the name "resort". Far from a resort in Western standards, the Samsara is more like what you could expect from the cheapest American motel, and for a similar price - we paid $50. In Nepal terms, it's a good option for a mid range hotel, but if problems with the hot water or heating would bother you, Nepal might not be a wise destination. The hotel does have a backup generator during power outages (which take place 1- 6 hrs a day, usually at prime hours), but only the light stays on. Heating, hot water and any other power outlets are off. The one bright spot is the nice breakfast they serve with even a few terrace tables available, and the staff is mostly very pleasant. They also have one computer with internet access for guests, however, it's hard to find it available and it doesn't work when there's an outage. All in all, this hotel could have been much more pleasant if they took maintenance more seriously. We had several problems while staying there. Stay away from rooms 201-301-401 - these are the biggest rooms, they're hard to heat and they share the hot water with the kitchen, which means no hot water for you.

  • Liked — Nice breakfast which was uncommon in the area
  • Disliked — Plenty of maintenance problems

Hadn't booked in advance and, after having to leave Kathmandu Guest House because of a very large incoming group, found the Samsara Resort. It's new, done out well with small bar, restaurant and really nice garden. Rooms are spacious with A/C and cable TV. Staff very firendly and helpful, from the poor young chap who has to lug suitcases up the stairs to rooms (there's no lift) to Ramesh, the attentive but unintrusive manager.

A real feeling that they really understand what service and hospitality are. It's no 5 star but there's good attention to detail everywhere. Was even called up by the restaurant at 10ish asking if I'd like a cuppa brought to the room! Would definitely staye here again and would happily reccommend to others.

Prices are a little higher than KGH garden rooms but I reckon it's well worth the extra $10 or so. Hope they keep the personal service up as the hotel becomes more popular, as I'm sure it will.

The Samsara is a brand new 5 storey hotel set in a peaceful garden behind the Vaishali Hotel off Thamel Marg in the popular tourist area of Kathmandu. Rooms are quiet, spacious, with very comfortable beds, plenty of pillows, reverse cycle a/c and spotless well appointed bathrooms with ample hot water. They have cable tv, fridges and broadband internet. There are great views of the mountains from the upper floors and roof terrace, and a sunny terrace for breakfast. The lobby has a small bar and restaurant with starched tablecloths and very helpful staff.

A key attraction of this hotel aside from its convenient but quiet location is the incredibly helpful, friendly but not intrusive manager who is always on hand to assist with any arrangements and who is obviously keen to make this new hotel a success. The contrast between him and indeed the whole hotel with those in Tibet or India couldn't be more stark. After 3 months driving from Australia this hotel is the most comfortable and welcoming we have come across.

The only draw back but which shouldnt daunt too many travellers to Nepal is the lack of a lift, but we are assured that once the political situation stablises one will be installed.

  • Liked — Convenient but quiet location, clean well appointed rooms and helpful staff
  • Disliked — The stairs up to the 5th floor
  • Tips/Secrets — Find it next to Hotel Thamel (it's too new for most guidebooks/taxi drivers); ask the manager for anything
