stayed here for 2 nights. the hotel is decent. though the rooms look slightly old. rooms are spacious. bathrooms are clean. service is also decent. it is close to the market area and hence cabs are easily available. the garden is sweet.

Stayed here in 1999 and chose it this time primarily for the garden, which is a great refuge after touring around Kathmandu. We stayed here for 3 nights prior to our trek in a room on the second floor in the outer building overlooking the garden. The room was a good size and fairly comfortable & clean, but upon arrival the bathroom floor was covered with dust and debris from what appeared to be some renovation work. It was cleaned up right away when I brought it to the staff's attention. Breakfasts are good and plentiful, cost is $4US, not included in room price. The lunch & dinner menu had a good selection and the food was good. Staff were always helpful and attentive. If not for the garden I would rate the hotel as average.

This hotel was booked as part of tour package. This is priced and probably intended as a budget hotel. The review is focused on the basic rooms.

The hotel is in serious need of a make-over. It's just a really run down place. I am by no means a fussy traveller and I can accept a lot of things but if it's not clean it gets a poor rating (for me anyway). At this price point I would recommend to go elsewhere.

The beds are big and comfortable. But that doesn't excuse old chewing gum underneath the blanket and strands of hair on the sheets. The shower didn't drain properly and the bathroom got flooded. The rooms are carpeted which has stains and doesn't look very sanitary.

On the bright side the hotel has extremely helpful staff. When I asked for help with the shower, the reception lady gave me another room. This room has was in much better shape but the toilet didn't flush properly. So we switched to another room which didn't have a shower head holder (at this point I had a bright idea to use this to ask for an upgrade). I asked nicely for one of their exec rooms and she gave it to me for no extra charge. I think actually building a relationship with the reception lady while dealing with room issues helped. No-one likes a whiny and impatient/angry person. In the end we ended up with a pretty good room with no complaints.

The second time staying at the hotel on the return leg after going to Annapurna, our room had a filthy bathtub. But for 1 night, whatever... I'm not fussed. The rest of the room was bearable.

A big plus is the location though.

What a great location. Quiet and peaceful setting, yet not even 100 meters from the hustle and bustle of The Thamel district. Rooms overlook a lovely garden. The buffet breakfast is great (although not included in price like many other hotels) and the menu extensive. Staff were very helpful and attentive making for a relaxing stay. A great place to stay post trekking- we will stay again for sure.

A great location, simply the best staff in Kathmandu, however the rooms are now very tired and in desperate need of a makeover. Door handles keep falling off, there is also that third workld plumbing problem of sewer smells coming up the service cavity into the rooms. The garden is a welcome relief after a busy day in Kathmandu !

In Nepal, one must relate all ratings in relation to the price and the fact that Nepal is not Europe. Nirvana is really well located, has the basic services but lacks the finesse of a better hotel in Europe. The room was good, but as it lacks both heating and cooling, we had to ask for a separate heater, which they provided immediately.

The breakfast (included) is ok, but definitely not more.

I would say it's an ok two-star hotel with western standards. But with nepalese, it's good!

I really enjoyed my stay at Nirvana. Although on the pricey side (for Thamel) it was not unreasonable, and I would pay it again for the amazing breakfast, the lovely garden, and my own private balcony (overlooking said garden). Some of the staff were friendly, some not so much. My room was comfortable and clean, although the bathroom was a little on the shabby side (considering the room rate). Location was ideal – near everything you need, yet tucked in a corner away from the madness and street noise. Definitely a good post-trek option in my opinion.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the garden
