“Gorgeous hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2011

This boutique hotel is a little oasis in the busy city of Kathmandu. It's not a budget option for sure, but it is a lovely hotel. We were upgraded to a deluxe room, so enjoyed a really spacious room, with window seats, intricate carved wood panelling and beautiful decor.

The food was delicious and they try to offer organic options too, so each day, the notice board highlights what is organic on the menu.

For a touch of luxury for one night, it was perfect.

Please do NOT stay at this hotel. Despite the other reviews posted on this site, when you get to the hotel it might be nice to look at but you get max 3 hours of electricity and heat per day... and none of the rumoured hot water either! When its winter, that means you are FREEZING your back side off in the dark. Not a very good way to relax and take in the sites. What a rip off. For $50 one would expect much, much more. The owner must be off in warmer climes just raking in the dough from poor suckers like me.

The hotel is charming Newari style architecture with great garden setting. Location is in Thamel, but walking distance to the restaurants.

Pros:
-Heated blanket. This helps during the cold winter.
-Good location, although there's a dump site next to it...and you enter from an alley in the back. This is not good at night time when there are power outages..it gets really dark at night.
-Helpful staff & management

Cons:
-No Kettle in the room, so you can't make hot tea or coffee
-Really poor bathrooms. I'm really picky about having clean bathrooms...very low water pressure in the shower, so it felt cold showering during winter
-Toilet just seems dirrty...I dont know...we only found a proper bathroom @ the Hyatt during the entire tirp.
-They need to clean the dump site next to the hotel. Although we were bothered by the back alley entrance more so than the mount trash next door. There was 8 hour power outages I think, so it's tough in the evenings walking back, with poor light.

Overall, it was Ok....

A really good place to stay, a sense of tranquility as soon as you enter. Rooms were comfortable, though some beds firmer than others. Plenty of hot water for showers once you learnt to let the tap run enough. Solar power has to be the future. Also liked the provision of a water cooler so that you could fill up your own bottles, and save plastic. Friendly, helpful staff. Can't comment on price as it was booked by our tour company as part of a tour, stayed there several nights at various times in November. Definitely recommend it.

I stayed at the Kantipur Temple House in Katmandu both before and after a trek. It is centrally located in Thamel very near the old town, shops and museums. It is like an oasis in the crazy and loud city. You feel sequestered from the noise, pollution and hurry just outside it's garden courtyard. Take time to enjoy the gourmet cuisine of the hotel restaurant. You won't be disappointed. The chef is a magician creating fabulous meals of Nepali, Chinese, Indian, European and other cultures. The rooms are large, well outfitted, very clean and appropriately priced. The atmosphere is relaxed tolerant and courteous. Enjoy a snack or meal in the courtyard on a sunny afternoon. Rest in peace after a day bargaining with local merchants in the huge comfortable beds. If you make the effort to find this hotel, you won't be dissapointed.

This was our first stop on a 6 week trip and we returned to the hotel twice more during our stay in Nepal. It was an excellent choice. The owner, who is on site daily, was very helpful as was his staff. The hotel felt like home. It was down a side lane behind a wall but that gave us a sense of being apart from the hectic nature of the city and was a definite plus. We stayed in 3 different rooms and were very comfortable in each. The hotel architecture is a reproduction of older Nepalese buildings, with considerable beauty and character. We enjoyed our breakfasts in the courtyard.
