“Nice days at Vajra Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2011

The hotel is a very quiet place in the chaotic city of Kathmandu. There is a big garden in nepalese style and in the houses of Vajra you feel like staying in a temple. Everything seems a little bit dark and mystic. The rooms are quite big with a nice view into the garden.
Vajra is not a 4* Hotel, bur denitely a very nice and original place to stay. You can reach Thamel or Durbar Suqare by a walk about 20 minutes and on the roof there is a nice bar, where you can enjoy your sundowner. We stayed there twice, in the beginning of our journey and after we had done a trekking around Pokhara. If we go again to Kathmandu we will stay again in this nice hotel.

Our family stayed 3 nights at Hotel Vajra in December 2010. We were there for Christmas dinner and we had a lovely meal with gifts for the guests. It was mid-winter so the weather was cold. The meals and staff were very good during our stay. My wife had a problem with asthma during the stay and a doctor was organised to visit and then a boy sent to get some medicine from the chemist.
Overall we were very happy with our time spent at Hotel Vajra

The rooms are large and quite comfortable, although the decor is very dark which does not help in the frequent power cuts. The food is good, although best eaten outdoors as the restaurant has no atmosphere. The best features are the garden and the roof terrace. Although Kathmandu is interesting in many ways, it is also very traffic polluted and filthy with rubbish everywhere, so it is a very welcome relief to come back to the Vajra.

This is a great place to stay in a busy city like Kathmandu. And a good base to get everything sorted before you head off on a trek. Or when you return back from your trip and want to do some sightseeing.
The hotel has a strong Tibetan buddhist influence in its design and decor. It's a very calm and peaceful place to stay with lovely well kept gardens and interesting rooms.
It's a short taxi journey from the centre of town or a very interesting walk down the hill. But we didn't feel we were missing out on a true Kathmandu experience as you can get a decent nights sleep because its reasonably quiet there in that part of the city. It's a family run business and is efficient as well as friendly. But I do agree with another writer that the bedding can be a bit hit and miss.
The rooftop bar serves a mean gin and tonic.
You can change money at the hotel. It serves a good pre-trekking breakfast of fruit, eggs, yoghurt and potatoes. The restaurant also does decent, good value evening meals.

Room Tip: Go for the best you can afford

We ave spent ' nights at Vajra hotel , 2 couples and 5 kids .The design and architecture of the hotel is really nice and typical .Qiet qnd well locqted .It was exactly what we were looking for .
However , looks like at Katmandu , tourists are plenty , therefore no efforts are given to the service and cleaningless .What for ? more tourists that typical hotel structures ...Indeed , very rude service , impolite staffs (reception desk mostly ) , dirty rooms , (our bed sheets were not changed from previous guests) , short of electricity (wild saving on electricity costs) ,and many not maintained assets (toilets , sink , ceiling ,...)
So Pity , with a proper management they could have done a"Golden location ..."
In conclusion : you want nice & typical place ! Is is ..you look for minimum service and warm welcome, go away...

Hotel Vajra is a welcome respite from the hectic streets of Kathmandu. The hotel is walled off from the street and you enter a beautiful oasis with large trees, gardens, patios and peace. The hotel is very large with many room choices - we were 3 adults so had a queen and one twin, not that easy to find in Asia. We had a deck that looked out over gardens and enjoyed the bird song and leaves and tree branches rustling. The breakfast buffet is poorly maintained with many items running out and slow service. The dinner we had was very good with better service from our waiter. Don't miss the roof top area for food and drink - great views of the city. We were able to walk to the Monkey Temple from the hotel which was nice. Even with the power on for only 10 hours a day, the candles in the bathroom worked well for afternoon showers. Ask the front desk what time the power is on/off so you can plan your time.

Room Tip: Tranquil setting in busy city

The staff made the hotel a very good place. They are very friendly and go out of their way to make the stay pleasant. The hotel breakfast never varies, but is flavorful and the service is good. Food in the restaurant is also fairly good and reasonably priced. The tour arranging staff is extremely good at arranging trips to other cities and places. The grounds are quite beautiful. The hotel will lend you an adapter for your appliances as the European type we brought didn't fit in the wall outlets. The only thing they need to work on a lot is housekeeping. We sometimes had to ask for clean towels, and the dust under the beds was probably accumulating since the hotel was built.
