“Good location, rooms ok, water dreadful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

Used as the starting and end point for an Everest Base camp trek. So when we got back from over two weeks camping at altitude it seemed like pure luxury!! Food was average, nothing to reqlly complain about, but we only had breakfast and snacks, so cannot really comment on dinner as we ate in town. Rooms were pretty tiday and clean and treated drinking water was always available. Bar and gardens were nice and pool was clean. Spent a few hours eating club sandwiches and drinking beer in the warm sunshine. Staff were indifferent to rude, especially the bar staff. Cleaning ladies were fun and smiley. The only real downside, which possibly affects most establishments in Kathmandu was the water for showering and washing in. It was brown and very smelly, so keep you mouth well and truly shut when showering or washing unless you want a really bad belly. One of our party made the fateful mistake of briefly brushing her teeth with this and that was game over for her trekking trip - she lasted two days out of Lukla. So be warned.

Room Tip: Get one facing the gardens and pool

The hotel used to be a grand hotel, at least you get the feeling. However, almost everything looks old and run down, refurbishment is necessary. The hotel has a nice garden and a pool (was pretty cold when we were there).
The main advantage of this hotel is its location. Located in Thamel you can reach most of Kathmandu's main attractions by foot.

Well located within easy walking or taxi ride of main tourist areas, and is probably one of Kathmandu's better hotels.
Service very willing but the hotel is very tired and the food looks great but is nothing special.
Annoyingly there charge an exorbitant amount for wifi access, which is very irritating as every othr cafe does it for free.
Lobby looks grander than the rest of the hotel, good gardens

We were on a booked tour. The Trescher Verlag guide book about Nepal praized the hotel and I was looking forward to staying at the Malla. The reality is complatelly different: the hotel must have been very nice when it was opened- marbel bathroom, exuisite wood carving, nice garden but it is badly kept nowadays. It is dirty, the furniture is old, the electricity falls out (or they save the energy), the air conditioning works sporadically and is so loud you cannot sleep. The guests are charged extra for the wi-fi by the hour but it often doesn't work and if it does, only in the lobby. The towels were brought to our room only after we compained very firmly, twice at the reception and they are grayish- yellowish. Bedlinnen as well. The water in the toilet leaks and the fridge in the room doesn't work.I was afraid all the time that I am going to catch an infection. if the hotel had been better, I am sure my whole perception of Nepal would have been much better. So, I would definitivly not recommend it.

Have stayed here several times on visits to Nepal and as a stop over en-route to Bhutan. Have always found the staff polite and helpful and the rooms more than adequate, it's Nepal after all not the Hilton in London or New York! The power does go off which is not the fault of the hotel but a fact of life for the inhabitants of Kathmandu, and the back up generator soon kicks in. As has been noted elsewhere this hotel is an oasis of calm, with a lovely enclosed garden / lawn area, in a frenetic city. For shopping it is very close to the busy streets of the Tamil district where almost anything can be bought, just mind the motor bikes!

This is the second time that I have stayed at this at this hotel. Its location is great as it is very close to the bustle of the Thamel area of Kathmandu with its wealth of shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. Although close to the heart of Kathmandu, it offers an oasis of tranquility with its comfortable rooms and large and very attractive garden. The furnishings in the room were a little jaded but perfectly acceptable. It was an absolute joy to have a room with a view of the garden. The service is excellent with staff doing everything possible to make your stay as comfortable and easy as possible. Breakfast in the art deco style restaurant is excellent value with a good range of options for vegetarians. My only complaint was that, on our first night, a charity concert took place in the garden and this went on late. We wanted to get to sleep early but the windows of the room were rattling from the bass. We would have been much happier if we has been pre-warned at check-in that the event was taking place and if it had ended by 10pm.

The hotel rooms are a little tired but comfortable. The staff are very helpful and friendly and provide a good service. It is not the fault of the hotel that the electricity in Kathmandu is unreliable and goes off on a regular basis but the generator kicks in and some power is restored. Lovely hot shower, always a plus! Good breakfasts too.
